Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Dudley Dynasty

By the end of the week, the Turner-Guilford-Knight Correctional Center in Miami was holding Victoria Dudley in a high-security protective isolation cell.

Deprived of her designer cosmetics, hair extensions, and expensive wardrobe, the former socialite looked twenty years older. She sat on the cold steel bench wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, her hands trembling as her court-appointed public defender sat across from her.

Her high-priced private defense attorneys had all withdrawn from her case after learning that her bank accounts had been frozen by federal order.

“Where is my son?!” Victoria rasped, her voice hoarse from crying. “Why hasn't Lewis come to see me?!”

The young public defender sighed, opening a thick manila folder.

“Your son accepted a plea bargain thirty minutes ago, Mrs. Dudley,” the public defender said plainly.

Victoria froze, her blood turning to ice. “What… what did you say?”

“Lewis signed a full confession and agreed to state’s evidence,” the lawyer revealed. “In exchange for testifying against you and the six other women, the prosecutor has agreed to drop the attempted murder charges against him, recommending a reduced sentence of twelve years in state prison.”

“NO!” Victoria shrieked, slamming her fists onto the metal table. “He betrayed me! I did everything for him! I tried to get that condo for him!”

“The four other women have also agreed to turn state’s evidence against you, Mrs. Dudley,” the defender added without sympathy. “They claim you orchestrated the entire assault, misled them into believing Chloe had stolen family money, and forced them to participate. You are looking at a mandatory sentence of thirty-five years to life without parole.”

Victoria sank back onto the steel bench, her breath coming in ragged, panting gasps.

The reality of her hubris was finally crushing her. She had targeted a girl she thought was helpless, completely ignorant of the fact that Chloe’s father was a man who could buy and sell her entire world before breakfast.

Meanwhile, back at the Sterling Estate in Star Island, life was slowly returning to a new normal.

Robert had insisted that Chloe and I move into his gated waterfront estate during her recovery. For the first time in ten years, the three of us ate dinner together at the same table.

The silence that had separated our family for a decade was finally broken, replaced by long conversations, shared memories, and a deep, unspoken effort to heal old wounds.

“I made a mistake ten years ago, Sarah,” Robert said quietly one evening as we stood on the back patio, watching the sunset over Biscayne Bay while Chloe rested inside. “I let my work and my ego destroy our home. I walked away when you needed me most.”

I looked at my ex-husband. The cold, unapproachable billionaire was gone; in his eyes was genuine remorse.

“You came back when it mattered most, Robert,” I said softly. “You saved our daughter.”

“We saved her,” Robert corrected, taking my hand gently into his. “Together.”
