Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION OF THE ACCOMPLICES

Three days later, the Dallas County detention center’s holding rooms were filled with the kind of high-stakes panic that only wealthy people facing actual prison time could produce.

In interrogation room B, a middle-aged woman named Beatrice Vanderbelt—one of Carmen Robles’s closest socialite friends and an active participant in the wedding night assault—was sobbing uncontrollably across the metal table from a federal prosecutor and Alexander’s chief litigator.

“I didn’t hit her!” Beatrice wailed, dabbing her mascara-stained face with a cheap paper tissue. “Carmen told us the girl was trying to steal family heirlooms! She said we just needed to scare her into signing a standard property transfer document! None of us knew Carmen was going to go that far!”

Marcus Vance, standing silently in the corner of the room with his arms crossed over his chest, stepped forward into the harsh fluorescent light.

“Mrs. Vanderbelt,” Marcus said, his voice deadpan and icy. “The audio recordings captured by the hotel hallway sensors directly contradict your statement. We have you on tape laughing while Carmen landed the fifteenth blow, and we have your voice explicitly stating, ‘A disobedient bride needs to be broken in early.’ That isn't a misunderstanding. That’s premeditated criminal conspiracy.”

Beatrice’s face turned gray. “Please… my husband is a state senator… if this goes to trial, our lives are finished… what do you want?”

“We don’t want anything from you, Beatrice,” a deep, commanding voice echoed from the doorway.

Alexander Caldwell walked into the interrogation room, his gray overcoat unbuttoned, his presence filling the cramped concrete space with an overwhelming gravity.

Beatrice shrank back into her chair, trembling like a leaf. “Alexander… please… we’ve known each other for years, at charity galas, at country club dinners—”

“My daughter was eight stone soaking wet when you held her arms down while another woman beat her forty times,” Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “You didn’t see a human being on that bed, Beatrice. You saw an obstacle to your social standing.”

He placed both hands on the metal table, leaning down until his eyes were locked directly onto hers.

“Here is your only option,” Alexander continued. “You sign a full, unvarnished, video-recorded confession detailing every instruction Carmen Robles gave you, every lie she told, and every dollar of laundered money that passed through her charitable foundations. You plead guilty to aggravated assault and conspiracy, and you accept whatever plea deal the district attorney offers you.”

“And if I don’t?” Beatrice whispered, her voice cracking.

“If you don’t,” Alexander smiled coldly, “my legal team will ensure that every single shell corporation, tax evasion scheme, and illicit real estate transaction your husband has participated in over the last fifteen years is plastered across the front page of every national newspaper before the weekend is over. You won't just go to prison, Beatrice. You’ll go completely bankrupt, and your husband will be wearing an orange jumpsuit right beside you.”

Beatrice looked at the prosecutor, then at Marcus, and finally into Alexander’s merciless gray eyes.

She reached out with a shaking hand, picked up the pen, and signed the confession without another word.
