Chapter 5 - The Corporate Interrogation

While I rested in the secure hospital suite, twenty miles away at the county detention center, the reality of their situation was finally sinking in for my children.
Marcus Vale sat in a cold, fluorescent-lit holding cell, wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit instead of his thousand-dollar Italian wool suit. His expensive gold Rolex had been cataloged into a plastic evidence bag, leaving his wrist feeling uncomfortably bare.
The heavy metal door clicked open, and two detectives stepped inside, tossing a thick manila folder onto the stainless-steel table.
“Sit down, Mr. Vale,” Detective Sergeant Cole said, pulling out a metal chair.
Marcus crossed his arms, attempting to summon the arrogant boardroom demeanor that had served him so well in his mid-level corporate finance job. “This is an outrage. I want my lawyer. You have no right to keep me here over a domestic spat—!”
“A domestic spat?” Detective Cole interrupted, leaning forward with a humorless smirk. He opened the manila folder and slid a printed financial audit across the table. “Mr. Vale, let’s talk about your definition of a spat. Are you familiar with a company called Meridian Logistics?”
Marcus blinked, a sudden bead of sweat forming on his forehead. “What? Meridian Logistics? That’s a subsidiary of my mother’s trust holdings...”
“Correction: your mother’s holding company,” Cole corrected sharply. “An emergency forensic audit conducted this morning by Vale Meridian Holdings has uncovered a systematic embezzlement scheme running through your department. Over the last three years, you siphoned nearly eight hundred thousand dollars in corporate funds to cover personal real estate investments, luxury vehicles, and high-end escorts.”
Marcus staggered backward against the concrete wall, his color draining until he looked like a ghost. “That’s... that’s impossible. Mom didn't audit my department! She doesn't even know how to read corporate ledgers!”
“Your mother,” another voice chimed in as the door opened further, revealing Marcus Vance stepping into the cell, “is the woman who built the entire financial infrastructure of Vale Meridian before you were old enough to spell 'balance sheet.' You thought she was a simple farmer’s wife, Marcus. In reality, she was the primary financial strategist for our entire corporate network.”
Marcus stared at the attorney, his lips trembling. “No... no, she’s just an old woman...”
“She’s the woman who just signed your corporate indictment,” Vance said smoothly, dropping a second stack of papers onto the table. “In addition to aggravated assault and elder abuse, you are now facing federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. Estimated prison time? Fifteen to twenty years.”
Meanwhile, two cells down, Rachel was experiencing her own terrifying awakening.

Her boutique creditors, alerted by the news of her arrest and the freezing of her family assets, had immediately filed involuntary bankruptcy motions. Every designer handbag, every leased luxury SUV, and every inflated credit line she had used to project a lifestyle of elite wealth was being repossessed by morning.
The queen of high society had officially been stripped of her crown, her kingdom, and her illusion.
