Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

The morning sun rose over the Hudson River in a brilliant explosion of amber, gold, and rose-pink, chasing away the last lingering shadows of winter.
I stepped out onto the stone veranda wrapped in a heavy cashmere shawl, taking a deep, revitalizing breath of the crisp morning air. My body felt strong. My mind was entirely at peace.
Down by the shoreline, a pair of swans glided smoothly across the glassy surface of the water, leaving gentle ripples in their wake.
My phone—resting quietly on the patio table—buzzed with a single notification from Marcus Vance: the final quarterly report for the Sterling Foundation. Over two hundred seniors rescued from financial abuse; over fifty scholarships funded for young agricultural students; and an endowment that would outlive generations.
I didn't open the report immediately. Instead, I closed my eyes and let the warm morning sun wash over my face.
They had thought I was a poor, helpless old woman they could discard like trash. They had thought my love was an open bank account with no bottom.
