Chapter 8 - The Audio Confession

Marcus Sterling stood up, his hand shaking as he looked at the trust documents. "Even... even if the trust is valid, you can't just stop a court-approved corporate liquidation! The board voted on this!"

"The board voted under fraudulent pretenses," Sarah Jenkins countered. She opened her briefcase and pulled out a small digital audio player, placing it near the conference speaker system.

"Before Richard passed away," Sarah said, addressing the silent board members, "he knew that Victoria and Marcus were administering unauthorized doses of heavy sedatives and synthetic neurotoxins to incapacitate him. He managed to record a private conversation in his personal study three weeks ago."

Sarah pressed play.

The room went dead silent as a scratchy, clear recording filled the boardroom.

Victoria’s voice: "Just sign the proxy forms, Richard. Stop fighting it. The doctor says your mind is almost gone anyway."

Richard’s weak, rasping voice: "You... you poisoned me... didn't you, Victoria?"

Victoria’s cold laugh: "Does it matter? You thought you were so smart, hiding your money, pretending to leave Margaret with nothing so we wouldn't go after her. But in the end, you’re dying in this bed, and I’m taking every cent of your company."

Marcus’s voice: "Make sure the dose tonight is higher, Victoria. We need him dead before the federal auditors finish reviewing the offshore accounts."

The recording stopped.

Silence hung over the boardroom like a heavy shroud.

Victoria stood frozen, her eyes wide with terror, her hands trembling so violently she dropped her pen. Marcus Sterling slumped back into his chair, the color completely drained from his face.

"That... that's a deepfake!" Victoria shrieked, backing away from the table. "It's fabricated!"

"It isn't fabricated, Victoria," a stern voice announced from the doorway.

The double doors opened once more.

Four uniformed Federal Bureau of Investigation agents stepped into the room, accompanied by two representatives from the State Attorney's Office.

Special Agent David Miller walked straight up to Victoria and Marcus, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Victoria Sterling and Marcus Sterling," Agent Miller declared. "You are under arrest for federal corporate fraud, embezzlement, wire fraud, and first-degree murder in the death of Richard Hayes."

"No! Get your hands off me!" Victoria screamed as the agent grabbed her wrists and twisted them behind her back. "I’m the owner of this company! You can't do this to me!"

"You were never the owner, Victoria," I said, stepping right into her line of sight as the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists. "You were just a temporary parasite. And your time is up."

The agents dragged Victoria and Marcus out of the boardroom. Her high-pitched screams and curses echoed down the long hallway until the elevator doors closed, cutting her off forever.

I turned back to face the remaining ten board members. They were all standing motionless, staring at me with a mix of utter shock and deep terror.

I walked to the head of the table, pulled out the high-backed leather armchair where Richard used to sit, and sat down calmly.

"Gentlemen," I said, resting my hands flat on the polished mahogany table. "Let's discuss the future of my company."
