Chapter 6 - The DNA Test and the Panic at Carter Holdings

The DNA collection took place behind closed doors at a neutral medical facility in downtown Chicago early Thursday morning.
Sebastian arrived alone, wearing a dark trench coat, his expression carved from stone. He didn't speak to the reporters camped outside the parking garage; his security team formed an impenetrable wall, escorting him directly through the rear service entrance.
I arrived ten minutes later with the triplets, holding their small, warm hands as we walked past the flashing cameras.
"Look at the camera, babies," a photographer shouted.
Sophie instinctively hid behind my leg, while Ethan scowled at the lens, crossing his arms in a miniature imitation of Sebastian’s signature stance.
Inside the sterile white examination room, Dr. Marcus Vance—a pediatric geneticist with impeccable credentials—greeted us with a warm smile.
"Good morning, kids," Dr. Vance said cheerfully. "We're just going to do a quick, painless cheek swab today. Like brushing your teeth with a very soft Q-tip."
"Will it hurt?" Lucas asked, his big eyes wide.
"Not at all, buddy," Sebastian answered, stepping forward. He had been standing quietly in the corner of the room, watching the children with an expression of such profound, agonizing yearning that it caught in my throat.
Sebastian knelt down beside Lucas, his movements slow and careful. "You're very brave, Lucas. When I was your age, I hated going to the doctor."
Lucas studied Sebastian for a long moment, tilting his head just like his brother Ethan had done at the restaurant. "Did you have a stuffed bear?"
"I had a stuffed lion," Sebastian smiled softly. "His name was Leo."
"Hey! My name is Lucas!" the boy beamed, the tension melting away in an instant.
Within twenty minutes, the swabs were collected, sealed in tamper-proof forensic envelopes, and handed over to the courier service for expedited laboratory processing. Results were guaranteed within twenty-four hours.
As we stepped out of the clinic into the lobby, Sebastian’s phone buzzed violently.
He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his expression instantly darkened.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Eleanor," Sebastian muttered, rejecting the call. A second later, the phone buzzed again with a text message. He glanced down, reading the preview: 'Have you lost your mind? Bring Olivia to the estate immediately. You are destroying the family name.'
"She's panicking," I noted.
"She should be," Sebastian said coldly. "Because my mother doesn't know what I found on the Carter Holdings server last night."
"What did you find?"
Sebastian looked up, his dark eyes meeting mine with terrifying clarity. "Internal wire transfer logs. Five years ago, the day after you left the hospital, fifty thousand dollars was transferred from a corporate subsidiary account controlled by my mother directly to a private Swiss account registered in Olivia Bennett's maiden name."
My breath caught. "Payoff money."
"Bribe money," Sebastian corrected. "To ensure that any correspondence, emails, or medical bills you sent to my executive office were intercepted, flagged, and shredded before they ever reached my desk."

He clenched his jaw so hard I thought his teeth would crack.
"Olivia didn't just lie to me, Hannah. She engineered my isolation. And my mother helped her do it."
