Chapter 9 - The Truth Playback

The audio technician’s fingers flew across the control board.

A sharp, static hiss crackled through the grand speakers of The Grand Oak restaurant, silencing every murmur in the room. Then, a familiar voice filled the space—crystal clear, cold, and undeniably Olivia’s.

“Carter Residence, private line... Oh, hello, hospital billing department? Yes, this is Olivia Bennett, Mr. Carter’s fiancée. Regarding patient Hannah Valente... Yes, please divert all incoming voicemails directly to my administrative archive. And if Mr. Carter asks about the maternity ward inquiries, tell him the transfer failed due to system maintenance. That's right... delete the logs. No, she won't find out. She's too busy crying over her incubator bills anyway.”

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom like a freezing wind.

Whispers erupted instantly. Society matrons covered their mouths in horror; prominent businessmen shook their heads in utter disbelief.

Olivia stood frozen in the center aisle, her breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps. Her carefully constructed empire of wealth, privilege, and lies had just evaporated into thin air in less than thirty seconds.

Sebastian stepped down from the dais, walking slowly toward her until he stood towering over her shaking frame.

"That recording was automatically synced to my personal cloud archive from the old landline backup server," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that carried across the entire room. "You thought you deleted it from my phone, Olivia. But you forgot that corporate servers never forget anything."

Olivia opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She looked around the room, desperately searching for a single ally, but every face turned away in disgust.

"Mr. Carter!" A sharp voice cut through the crowd as two uniformed Chicago police officers—dispatched by Sebastian’s legal team earlier that evening—pushed their way through the doors. "Olivia Bennett? You're under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate conspiracy."

The click of steel handcuffs echoed sharply through the silence of the restaurant.

As Olivia was led away in tears, her designer dress dragging across the floor, not a single person in the room lifted a finger to help her.

Sebastian turned around, walking back toward the dais where I stood with the triplets.

He stopped in front of me, dropped down to one knee in front of the children, and looked up into my eyes with an expression of such deep, unfiltered remorse and love that it felt as though the last five years of pain finally washed away completely.

"Hannah," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I know an apology doesn't give us back the last five years. I know I don't deserve a second chance."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box—not a ring, but something far simpler, far more real: a vintage silver locket engraved with three tiny initials: E, S, L.

"Let me spend the rest of my life proving to you... and to them... that I will never let anyone take us apart again."

Ethan tilted his head, looking at Sebastian, then up at me.

"Mommy," the little boy asked seriously, "can he stay for dinner this time?"

A soft, genuine laugh escaped my lips as a single tear traced down my cheek.

May you like

I looked down at Sebastian, offering him my hand.

"Get up, Sebastian," I smiled softly. "You have a lot of catching up to do."
