Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Web

The next three days passed in a quiet, domestic rhythm that felt almost surreal.
Elias took a complete leave of absence from his firm. He spent his mornings making healthy, nutrient-rich meals for me, bringing tea to the sofa where I was resting, and helping Sophie with her schoolwork. He moved with a quiet, watchful grace, never pushing me for answers, never demanding forgiveness, simply serving us with a profound, steady devotion.
For the first time in six months, I wasn't fighting the world alone.
On Thursday afternoon, while Sophie was taking a nap in her room, the penthouse front door chimed.
Elias opened it to reveal Detective Alvarez—the detective I knew from the ER department—holding a dark leather binder.
"Doctor Adelaide," Detective Alvarez said, stepping into the foyer and bowing his head respectfully to me as I sat on the sofa. "Mr. Vance. Thank you for seeing me."
"Did you find something, Detective?" I asked, sitting up straighter.
Alvarez opened the binder on the dining table. "After the incident at the hospital three nights ago, your Chief of Medicine filed a formal request with the state attorney’s office to audit the board debt acquisition executed by Vance Global Holdings."
Elias’s jaw tightened. "My mother."
"It goes deeper than that, Mr. Vance," Alvarez said, pulling out several bank statements and legal affidavits. "We executed a search warrant on Arthur Pendelton’s law office yesterday morning. We discovered that six months ago, your mother didn't just threaten Doctor Adelaide’s fellowship. She actively manufactured a fraudulent ethics complaint against her."
I gasped. "What?"
"Mrs. Vance paid a senior administrator twenty-five thousand dollars to alter your residency evaluation logs," Alvarez explained, turning a page toward me. "They forged records to make it look like you had committed a critical medication error during a surgery six months ago. She was holding that forged file over your head. If Elias hadn't broken up with you, she was going to submit that fake report to the State Medical Board."
I fell back against the cushions, absolute horror washing over me.
She hadn't just made empty threats. She had laid an active, destructive landmine beneath my life’s work, waiting to detonate it the second I stepped out of line.
Elias slammed his fist onto the dining table with such force that the water glasses rattled.
"That miserable, evil woman," Elias growled, his face twisted in pure fury. "She tried to destroy Adelaide’s entire life just to maintain corporate control!"
"There’s more," Detective Alvarez added. "Because the funds used to bribe the administrator came from Vance Global Holdings’ tax-exempt charity account, this isn't just a civil matter anymore. This is federal wire fraud, bribery, and corporate corruption. The District Attorney issued an arrest warrant for Eleanor Vance one hour ago."
Elias stood motionless, processing the news that his own mother was about to be dragged away in handcuffs. But instead of sadness or panic, a look of profound, absolute relief washed over his face.
"Let them arrest her," Elias said, his voice cold and unwavering. "I’m filing a formal petition with the board of directors tomorrow morning to strip her of all executive authority."
Alvarez nodded, closing his binder. "She will be taken into custody by five o'clock today. You and Doctor Adelaide are completely safe."
After Detective Alvarez left, the apartment fell into a heavy, meaningful silence.
I looked over at Elias. He was standing by the large windows, staring out over the mountain skyline of Asheville, his shoulders rigid.
I got up slowly from the sofa, placing my hand over my belly, and walked across the room until I was standing right beside him.
"Elias," I called softly.
He turned to look at me, his eyes filled with lingering pain and heavy regret. "She almost ruined you, Adelaide. Because of my spinelessness, she almost ruined your entire life."
I reached out, taking his large, warm hand in mine.
"She didn't ruin me," I said, looking right into his eyes. "Because you protected me, even when it broke your heart. You took the blow so I wouldn't have to."
Elias looked down at our joined hands, his fingers tightening around mine as if he would never let go again.
"I don't want a life without you, Adelaide," he choked out, leaning his forehead gently against mine. "I don't care about the family estate. I don't care about the company. All I want is you, Sophie, and our baby girl. Please... give me a chance to be the father and the man you deserve."

Tears spilled over my lashes, warm and freeing.
"You're already becoming him," I whispered.
