Chapter 8 - The Birth of Clara

"Push, Adelaide! You’re doing amazing! Head is crowning!" Sarah’s voice echoed over the sound of the storm outside.
Pain like nothing I had ever experienced tore through my body, but Elias’s strong hands held me steady. He didn't flinch. He didn't turn away. He stayed right by my shoulder, wiping the sweat from my forehead, whispering words of devotion into my ear.
"One more big push, Adelaide! Give me everything you've got!"
I gathered every shred of love, resilience, and strength I possessed, squeezing my eyes shut, and pushed with all my heart.
At 11:42 PM, amid the rumble of thunder outside, a sudden, high-pitched cry pierced the air of the delivery room.
"She’s here!" Sarah called out joyfully. "Time of birth: 11:42 PM!"
The pediatric team immediately stepped forward, holding a tiny, pink, squirming baby wrapped in warm sterile towels.
"Four pounds, six ounces!" Dr. Chen announced, checking her oxygen levels. "Lungs are clear! She’s breathing on her own!"
Tears burst from my eyes as they laid the tiny bundle briefly against my chest.
She was impossibly small, with a dusting of dark hair just like mine, her tiny fingers clutching frantically at the air.
Elias let out a loud, broken sob, dropping to his knees beside the bed. He stared at our daughter with absolute, pure adoration, his large hand trembling as he gently stroked the side of her tiny cheek with one finger.
"Clara..." Elias whispered, his voice shaking with profound love. "Welcome to the world, Clara."
"She needs to go to the NICU for observation due to her prematurity," Dr. Chen said gently, picking Clara up to place her into the warm transport incubator. "But she is healthy, strong, and thriving."
As the NICU team wheeled our daughter out, Elias stood up, looking between the door and me, torn.
"Go with her," I smiled through my tears, holding his hand. "Go protect our baby girl."
Elias leaned down, pressing a deep, passionate kiss against my lips—a kiss filled with six months of unspent love, relief, and promise for the future.

"I love you, Adelaide," he whispered against my mouth. "I have always loved you."
"I love you too, Elias," I replied. "Now go be her daddy."
