Chapter 7 - The Motel on the Edge of Nowhere

The drive to the motel felt like driving into the belly of a beast. The place was a relic of a dying highway, surrounded by overgrown weeds and flickering neon that buzzed like an angry insect. I sat in the passenger seat of Sarah’s car, my hands gripping a small voice recorder hidden in my coat.
"She’s in room 12," Sarah whispered, her eyes fixed on the dim light of the window. "The investigator found out her name is Chloe. She’s scared, Mia. Her father owns this place, and he’s just as ruthless as your parents."
I stepped out into the humid night air, the smell of damp earth and gasoline hanging heavy. My heartbeat echoed in my ears—a reminder of the rhythm of that night in the garage. I walked to room 12 and knocked. Once. Twice.
The door cracked open, held by a chain. A girl—no older than me, with tired, hollow eyes—looked out. She recoiled when she saw me. "Go away," she hissed. "I don't know who you are, but if you're with him, I told him I’d stop talking!"
"I’m not with him," I said, my voice steady for the first time in months. "I’m the girl he put in the hospital. I’m the daughter of the man who’s using you as a pawn. And I’m here to make sure he never hurts either of us again."

I saw the flicker of hesitation in her eyes. I held up my phone, showing her the screenshot of the blackmail records I had found. Chloe gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She opened the door, and for the next hour, we sat on the floor of that dingy room, swapping stories of manipulation and control. She wasn't just a mistress; she was an accountant who had accidentally found the books, and my parents had been holding the threat of exposure over her head to keep her silent while they siphoned funds.
We weren't just victims; we were the only two people on earth who possessed the master key to their prison.
