Chapter 8 - The Strategy of Shadows

We had a plan, but it was a razor’s edge. Chloe agreed to provide the actual digital ledgers—the ones that proved the embezzlement—but only if I could guarantee her immunity. I contacted the only person I trusted: an investigative journalist named Marcus who had been chasing my father’s firm for years.
"If we drop this all at once," I explained to Sarah and Chloe in our makeshift war room, "they’ll try to spin it. My mother is a master of the narrative. We need to catch them in the act."
We orchestrated a meeting at the very motel where the affair had been staged. I sent my father an anonymous message, pretending to be Chloe’s father, demanding a final payment to "keep the secret buried." We knew his arrogance would drive him to show up in person, likely with my mother in tow to handle the "dirty work."
The night of the meeting, the rain returned, mirroring the night of the attack. I sat in the shadows of the lobby, hooked up to a transmitter that fed audio directly to Marcus and the police, who were stationed just out of sight.
When their black sedan pulled up, I felt a familiar, cold terror, but I anchored myself. I looked at the scar on my wrist, the one from the fall in the garage. That was my past. Tonight was my future.

They walked in—the golden couple, looking every bit the picture of aristocratic perfection. My mother was clutching her purse, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of trouble. My father was blustering, demanding to see "the owner."
"You want to see someone?" I stepped out from the shadows, my voice steady. "Look at me."
