Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Blackwood Empire

Over the next three weeks, the quiet townhouse became the headquarters of a war.

I refused to hide in the shadows like a victim. Working alongside Vance, Arthur, and the federal task force, I poured over thousands of pages of financial ledgers, clinical trials, and corporate emails that had been seized from Blackwood Manor under federal search warrants.

My knowledge of my own medical condition proved to be the missing link in the investigation.

"Look at this," I said one evening, pointing to a dark screen in Vance’s study. "These aren't medical supply purchases. Evelyn was altering the batch numbers of insulin shipments sent to public clinics funded by the Blackwood Foundation. She was diluting the medication and pocketing the federal subsidies!"

Vance leaned over my shoulder, his smell of sandalwood and rain wrapping around me. "She was starving clinics of working medication to inflate her non-profit profits..."

"It's murder by proxy," I whispered, turning my head.

Our faces were suddenly inches apart.

In the high-stakes pressure cooker of the investigation, the line between investigator and protected witness had blurred. I had seen Vance’s fierce protectiveness, his quiet humor when he brought me sugar-free tea at two in the morning, and the subtle, gentle way he always checked my monitor readings without making me feel burdensome.

"You're incredible, Elena," Vance murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips. "Most people would have broken after what they put you through. You just got smarter."

"I had a good reason to fight," I said softly, my heart fluttering for reasons that had nothing to do with low blood sugar. "And a good person standing beside me."

Before the moment could go further, Vance’s secure phone buzzed against the desk. He answered it, his tone instantly shifting back to crisp professionalism.

"Mercer," he said. He listened for ten seconds, his brow furrowing. "When? Alright. We’re on our way."

He hung up and looked at me. "Evelyn’s defense team just launched their opening strike. They’ve leaked a story to the national press."

He turned on the television in the corner.

A high-profile news anchor stood in front of the federal courthouse.

"In a shocking twist in the Blackwood scandal," the anchor announced, "lawyers for socialite Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood have released medical records alleging that the accuser, Elena Vargas, suffers from severe psychiatric delusions stemming from chronic hypoglycemia. The defense claims Miss Vargas staged the entire incident at her sister's wedding in a desperate bid to extort the Blackwood family after Grant Blackwood ended their engagement."

On screen, a video played of Grant standing beside his brother Julian outside their corporate headquarters.

"Elena is a sick girl," Grant told the reporters with practiced sorrow. "We tried to help her for years. But her condition made her unstable. She ruined my brother's wedding, and now she's trying to ruin our mother."

I stared at the television, my blood running cold.

They weren't just trying to kill me. They were trying to erase my sanity.

"Let them talk," Vance said, stepping in front of the screen and shutting it off. He reached down, took both of my hands in his, and held them tight. "They're playing media games because they know the physical evidence is going to destroy them in court. We have the wineglass, Elena. We have the amber vial. And most importantly... we have you."
