Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

Grant didn’t know it yet, but his corporate accounts were bleeding. By morning, his main business account was flagged for a "security audit" because of the unauthorized transfers. My lawyer, Olivia, had already informed the IRS of "irregularities" in the firm’s tax filings for the last four years. I had the documents; I had the paper trail.
I was released from the ICU on Thursday, bruised and walking with a limp, but I wasn't going home. I checked into a high-security hotel under an assumed name.
Grant’s panic had escalated from confusion to rage. His texts were no longer sweet; they were threats. “You stupid bitch. Do you know what you’ve done? My accounts are frozen. The client files are locked. Open the portal.”
I watched the screen, detached. He thought I was the one who had "locked" him out. He didn't understand that I was the security system. I had written the code; I held the master key.
My mother called again, her voice shrill. "How could you, Claire? Your father is facing eviction from our apartment because we counted on the equity from the Brookfield move! You’re heartless!"
"Heartless?" I replied, finally answering. "I’m in the ICU with three broken ribs because of the man you told me to 'fix my marriage' with. You didn't care when my lungs were failing. Why should I care about your apartment?"

I provided them with the medical records from the hospital, the photos of my injuries from the past, and the digital logs of the firm's illegal activities. I wasn't just filing for divorce; I was handing them the roadmap to Grant’s total systemic collapse.
