Chapter 5 - The Walls Close In

Down in the holding cells of the Manhattan Detention Complex, the reality of his new existence was finally crashing down around Ethan Sterling.

The custom-tailored Brioni suit he had worn into the hospital had been replaced by a coarse, oversized orange jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his jaw unshaven, and the arrogant, bulletproof swagger that had defined his public persona for a decade had completely evaporated.

He sat alone at a stainless-steel table in the visitor’s booth, staring at the smudged Plexiglas partition.

The door buzzed open, and his high-priced defense attorney, Jonathan Cole, walked in, looking flustered and carrying a thick briefcase overflowing with emergency filings.

“Jonathan!” Ethan cried out, standing up so fast his plastic chair scraped loudly against the concrete floor. “Get me out of here! This is a nightmare! The guards won't even let me make a phone call to my bankers!”

Jonathan sat down heavily, opening a file folder without making eye contact. “Ethan... sit down.”

“What are you talking about? Post bail! Pay whatever they want! I have millions in corporate stock—”

“You don't have a dime, Ethan,” Jonathan interrupted quietly, looking up with grim resignation. “The federal judge denied bail. The prosecution presented an airtight case of asset flight risk, supported by federal indictments for wire fraud and embezzlement.”

Ethan’s mouth hung open. “Embezzlement? From my own company? That’s absurd! I run Apex Development!”

“Not anymore,” Jonathan said flatly. “At 8:00 AM this morning, the board of directors convened an emergency session. They were presented with the irrevocable family trust documents and forensic audits proving that your wife—Claire—holds ninety percent voting control of the company.”

The name hit Ethan like a physical blow. He stumbled backward, his knees hitting the metal bench, collapsing back down as the blood drained from his face.

“Claire?” he stammered, shaking his head frantically. “No... no, that’s impossible. She’s quiet. She’s submissive. She wouldn't even look me in the eye when I yelled at her! She doesn't know the first thing about corporate law!”

“She wrote the corporate law governing your entire empire, Ethan,” Jonathan said coldly, slamming the folder shut. “And she didn't just strip your company title. She’s cooperating fully with the District Attorney’s office regarding the domestic assault charges. The D.A. is pushing for maximum sentencing without parole. You’re looking at fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary.”

Panic, pure and primal, gripped Ethan’s chest. He slammed his fists against the Plexiglas partition.

“Get her here!” Ethan shrieked, his voice cracking into a desperate squeal. “Tell her I want to talk! Tell her we can work this out! We’re husband and wife! She loves me!”

“Your wife filed for a fast-track divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty and attempted murder four hours ago,” Jonathan said, standing up and packing his briefcase. “And for the record, Ethan? Never mistake a victim’s silence for weakness. You woke the wrong dragon.”

The guard stepped up behind Ethan, grabbing his arm and hauling him away from the glass as Ethan screamed curses into the empty corridor, his empire crumbling into dust around him.
