CHAPTER 2 — The Pregnancy That Made No Sense

By the twelfth week, my pregnancy was progressing normally.
Physically.
Emotionally, I was falling apart.
I was carrying a child while my husband publicly treated me like a stranger.
Every appointment felt lonely.
Every ultrasound room reminded me of who wasn't there.
Then one afternoon, my obstetrician asked a question.
"Your husband had a vasectomy?"
"Yes."
"And you're absolutely certain?"
"Yes."
The doctor frowned.
"Did he ever have a follow-up fertility test afterward?"
I blinked.
"I don't know."
The doctor leaned back.
"Many men assume a vasectomy works immediately."
My heart skipped.
"What do you mean?"
She folded her hands.
"A vasectomy isn't instant."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"There can still be viable sperm for weeks or even months afterward."
Suddenly the room felt quiet.
Very quiet.
The doctor continued.
"It happens more often than people think."
I couldn't breathe.
"Are you saying..."
"I'm saying pregnancy after a vasectomy is rare."
She paused.
"But not impossible."
For the first time in months, a tiny spark of hope appeared.
Maybe I wasn't crazy.
Maybe I wasn't a cheater.
Maybe Ethan had destroyed our marriage over something he never bothered to verify.
The doctor ordered additional testing.
Including a DNA paternity test after birth.
Just to remove any doubt.
I agreed immediately.
Because I already knew the answer.
I had never betrayed my husband.
Not once.
Meanwhile Ethan continued building his new life.
Word spread quickly that he was engaged to the blonde woman.
Apparently they'd met shortly before our separation.
The timing made my stomach turn.
But I no longer had the energy to care.
I focused on my baby.
The one person who hadn't abandoned me.
The one person still fighting beside me every day.
Then, at twenty weeks, everything changed.
My doctor called.
"Your anatomy scan is tomorrow."
I nodded.
"Okay."
She hesitated.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"Your husband requested to attend."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"He what?"
"He contacted the office."
I sat frozen.
After months of silence...
After accusing me of betrayal...
After leaving me for another woman...
Now he wanted to come?
I almost said no.
But something inside me whispered:
Let him come.
May you like
Because the truth was finally catching up.
