CHAPTER 3 — The Ultrasound Room

The next afternoon, Ethan walked into the ultrasound clinic.
He looked different.
Older.
Harder.
But still familiar enough to hurt.
Neither of us spoke.
The technician began the scan.
Black-and-white images appeared on the screen.
Tiny arms.
Tiny legs.
A beating heart.
I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
The technician smiled.
"Healthy baby."
For a moment, nobody said anything.
Then Ethan quietly asked:
"Can we do the paternity test as soon as possible?"
The room went silent.
The technician glanced awkwardly toward the doctor.
The doctor folded her arms.
"Actually, Mr. Carter..."
Ethan looked up.
"Yes?"
"We received your medical records."
His expression changed slightly.
"What about them?"
The doctor opened a folder.
"You underwent a vasectomy two months before conception."
"Exactly."
"And according to your records..."
She paused.
"You never completed the required follow-up fertility examination."
Ethan frowned.
"So?"
The doctor looked directly at him.
"So we reviewed the surgeon's notes."
My pulse quickened.
Ethan shifted uncomfortably.
The doctor continued.
"The procedure was incomplete."
The room froze.
"What?"
"The surgeon documented complications."
Ethan's face went pale.
"He recommended additional testing because active sperm were still present."
The doctor placed the paperwork on the table.
"You never returned."
Ethan stared at the documents.
His hands began to tremble.
"No..."
"You remained fertile."
"No..."
"The pregnancy is entirely possible."
His face lost all color.
The room was silent except for the sound of our baby's heartbeat.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
The sound echoed like a verdict.
And then the biggest shock came.
The doctor turned the monitor toward us.
"There is one more thing."
Ethan looked up slowly.
The technician smiled.
"Congratulations."
She pointed at the screen.
Then another image appeared.
And another.
Ethan's jaw dropped.
I stopped breathing.
The doctor laughed softly.
"You're not having one baby."
The room spun.
"What?"
She smiled wider.
"You're having three."
Triplets.
Three tiny heartbeats flickered across the monitor.
Three babies.
Three miracles.
And at that exact moment, Ethan began crying.
Not quietly.
Not politely.
The kind of crying that comes when a person realizes they destroyed everything with their own hands.
He had called me a traitor.
He had abandoned me.
He had replaced me.
And now he was staring at undeniable proof that not only were the babies his...
But he was about to become the father of three children he had spent months denying.
The ultrasound room was silent except for his sobs.
May you like
And for the first time in months...
I wasn't the one whose world was falling apart.
