Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Trap

Within three hours of Owen’s arrest, Gloria Crane arrived at the Black Hawk County Jail in a chauffeur-driven sedan, flanked by two of the highest-paid defense attorneys in Iowa.
She marched into the station lobby like a queen visiting a peasant village, her pearl necklace gleaming under the fluorescent lights.
"I demand to see my son immediately!" Gloria barked at the desk sergeant. "This is a absurd misunderstanding! My daughter-in-law is emotionally unstable and staged this entire dramatic incident to destroy my family's reputation!"
Before the sergeant could reply, a tall man in a dark tailored suit stepped out from the inner offices. It was Marcus Vance—not a deputy, but one of the top high-stakes family law and criminal prosecutors in the state, and the older brother of Deputy Vance.
"Mrs. Crane," Marcus said smoothly, holding a thick leather briefcase. "I wouldn't advise making public statements about your daughter-in-law's mental state. The media is already parked outside."
"And who are you?" Gloria sneered.
"I am Natalie Crane’s legal counsel," Marcus replied with a calm, lethal smile. "And I am here to serve you and your son with a temporary restraining order, a petition for emergency full custody, and a grand jury subpoena."
Gloria laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "Subpoena for what? A domestic dispute? Owen will be out on bail in an hour."
"Not quite," Marcus said, leaning in closer. "You see, Gloria, when Natalie was admitted to the emergency room, the hospital performed extensive genetic analysis on the baby to treat a rare blood condition. That analysis required checking the state registry records for the Crane family trust."
Gloria’s face visibly paled. The color drained from her lips so fast she looked like a corpse.
"What are you talking about?" she whispered, her voice losing its boisterous edge.
"We found something very interesting," Marcus continued softly. "According to the official blood records on file with the Department of Health, the late Arthur Crane—your husband—carried a blood genotype that makes it biologically impossible for him to be Owen’s father. Furthermore, Owen’s DNA does not match a single living relative in the Crane lineage."
Gloria’s hands began to tremble. She clutched her leather handbag to her chest like a shield.
"Thirty-four years ago," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a whisper that cut through Gloria like a knife, "the Crane Family Trust was structured so that only direct biological heirs of Arthur Crane could inherit the forty-million-dollar estate and agricultural holdings. If Arthur died without a biological heir, the entire estate was set to revert to a public charitable foundation."
Marcus took a step forward, his eyes locking onto Gloria’s terrified gaze.
"You had a stillborn baby in 1992, didn't you, Gloria? And you bought an illegal newborn from an unregistered clinic in Missouri to keep control of the Crane fortune."

"That's... that's a lie!" Gloria gasped, staggering back against her lawyer. "That’s slander!"
"It’s science," Marcus replied. "And the court has just ordered a court-mandated DNA swab for both Owen and yourself. If those results confirm what the hospital labs already know, Owen isn't a Crane. He never was. Which means every penny he has spent, every contract he has signed, and every asset in the Crane trust has been possessed through thirty years of grand larceny and fraud."
