Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The next morning, I sat in my private hospital room, holding Lily in my arms. The cuts on my hands were neatly bandaged, and for the first time in four years, the crushing weight of anxiety that had defined my marriage was gone.

Marcus Vance sat in the armchair beside my bed, his laptop open.

"Owen’s bail hearing was held at 9:00 AM," Marcus told me. "The judge saw the smart lock server logs. Owen’s phone showed he specifically typed in the override command to lock the front door forty-five seconds after you texted him that your contractions were three minutes apart. The judge deemed him a flight risk and set bail at two million dollars."

"Can Gloria pay it?" I asked.

"Gloria’s bank accounts were frozen three hours ago," Marcus smiled grimly. "The trustees of the Crane Estate were notified of the genetic fraud investigation. The board of directors held an emergency meeting and suspended both Gloria and Owen from the executive board. They've launched a full forensic audit."

I looked down at tiny Lily, who was sleeping peacefully against my chest. "He left me to die in that house for a lie. An entire family empire built on a fake bloodline."

"It gets worse," Marcus said, pulling up a document on his screen. "We pulled the security camera footage from the Waterloo Country Club from the night of the party. While you were breaking your way out of the house, Owen was making toasts with his friends, laughing about how he had 'put you in your place.'"

"Release it," I said without hesitation.

Marcus looked up, surprised. "Are you sure, Natalie? The media attention will be intense."

"For four years, Gloria and Owen made me feel like I was nothing," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. "They isolated me, gaslit me, and tried to convince everyone in this town that I was crazy. They thought they could lock me in a cage and walk away. Let the world see who they really are."

By noon that day, Marcus released the security footage alongside the 911 audio log of my escape.

The audio was harrowing: the sound of my breathless, terrified gasps, the bone-chilling thud of the iron poker smashing through glass, and my agonizing cries for help as I crawled out into the storm.

It contrast violently with the video footage of Owen laughing at a lavish dinner table, holding up a glass of champagne, boasting about leaving his wife home alone.

The story went nuclear.

Within six hours, the video had over ten million views across news outlets and social media platforms. News anchors dubbed Owen "The Birthday Cake Monster." The public outrage was absolute. Demonstrators gathered outside the county jail holding signs that read JUSTICE FOR NATALIE and LOCK HIM UP.
