Chapter 6 - Family Lines

The illusion of a united extended family shattered completely by the end of the week.
When news of Patricia’s arrest filtered through the family grapevine, the initial shock quickly curdled into a vicious tribal war.
First came the text messages from aunts and uncles I barely knew, accusing us of exaggeration. “She’s an old woman!” “You’re ruining her final years over a family misunderstanding!” “Drop the charges and handle this privately like Christians!”
Then came the flying monkeys—cousins calling Ethan to lecture him about "honor" and "respect for elders," acting as though Patricia had merely yelled at the baby instead of poisoning her with prescription-strength sedatives and striking her across the face in the middle of the night.
Ethan handled them with a cold, surgical precision that left me in awe.
He didn't argue. He didn't debate. He sent a single, mass text message to every single relative who dared defend her actions:
"My mother physically assaulted my one-year-old daughter and systematically administered heavy sedatives to her behind our backs. If anyone in this family contacts us again to defend her actions, or attempts to minimize what she did, you will be permanently blocked from our lives and our daughter's future. Consider this your only warning."

After that, the phone stopped ringing. The group chats went dead silent.
The isolation was absolute, but it was also liberating. For the first time in our marriage, our home was truly ours. No uninvited opinions, no secret judgments, no toxic architecture left behind by people who believed love meant obedience and control.
