Chapter 7 - The Bail Hearing and the Mask Slips

Two weeks after her arrest, Patricia’s defense attorney filed a motion for a reduced bond, leading to a preliminary bond review hearing at the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney.
Ethan and I decided to attend. We sat in the second row of the public gallery, watching the legal proceedings unfold under the harsh fluorescent lights of the courtroom.
When Patricia was led in through the side door by a bailiff, she looked smaller than she had at home. Her gray hair was unstyled, her posture slightly stooped, wearing the standard orange jumpsuit of the county jail.
For a brief second, she scanned the gallery and caught our eyes.
The moment she saw Ethan sitting beside me, stone-faced and unresponsive, her fragile, victimized grandmother mask instantly dissolved. A flash of pure, venomous hatred twisted her features—the exact same look she had given me in the nursery right before she struck my baby.
Her defense attorney stood up and delivered a polished, sympathetic speech about her advanced age, her lack of prior criminal record, and her deep ties to the community, arguing that house arrest with her sister in Fort Worth would be an appropriate alternative to continued detention.
Then the prosecutor stood up.
He didn't raise his voice. He simply walked to the podium, opened a folder, and laid out the facts.
He detailed the pediatric hospital records, the toxicology breakdown of the sedatives found in Mia’s system, the police photographs of the hidden liquid bottle, and—most damningly—the historical medical context gathered from prior pediatrician visits where Mia’s unexplained lethargy had baffled doctors for months.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor said smoothly, "the defendant poses a clear, present, and severe danger not only to the victim—her own one-year-old granddaughter—but to the community at large. This was not an accident. This was a calculated, repeated administration of restricted central nervous system depressants to an infant in order to secure domestic convenience."
The judge listened intently, reviewed the file, and delivered his ruling without hesitation.
"Motion for reduced bond denied," the judge announced, slamming his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack. "The defendant will remain remanded to the custody of the Collin County detention center pending trial."

As the bailiff touched Patricia’s arm to lead her back through the side door, she turned her head toward the gallery one last time. Her lips moved, forming silent, venomous words directed straight at Ethan: “Ungrateful.”
Then the heavy wooden door swung shut, locking her away from our world for good.
