Chapter 4 - The Masquerade of Lies

Two weeks later, the city was buzzing about the "Sterling Gala." It was the event of the season, and it was meant to be the official unveiling of the new Sterling Pediatric Wing. I arrived wearing a gown that was a testament to the iron behind the silk—midnight blue, structured, and sharp.

Weston was there. He hadn't been invited, but he had snuck in, likely hoping to leverage his remaining ties to the press. He stood by the champagne fountain, looking disheveled, his suit lacking the crispness of his former life. Ashley was nowhere to be seen, likely sidelined as his resources evaporated.

He caught my eye and smirked, walking over. "The gala is impressive, Elena. But everyone knows you’re just playing house with your grandfather's money."

"Is that what you think?" I asked, sipping my champagne. I hadn't looked at him once, focusing instead on the dignitaries surrounding us.

"I have investors who still believe in my vision," he hissed, leaning in close. "Once I show them the flaws in your new management, you’ll be out, and I’ll be back in charge."

I turned to face him, my smile bright and artificial. "Weston, look behind you."

He turned. Standing there were three detectives from the Financial Crimes Unit, flanked by the lead investigator from my private audit. They weren't there for a gala; they were there for an arrest.

"We have the evidence of the shell corporations," I said, my voice carrying over the music as the crowd slowly quieted. "And we have the receipts for the tainted medical equipment you knowingly funneled into my children’s ward. The hospital is pressing charges for medical malpractice and corporate fraud."

The look of pure, unadulterated horror on his face was the most satisfying moment of my life. As they led him away in handcuffs, the flashbulbs of the cameras were blinding. The city didn't see a visionary; they saw a criminal who had tried to kill his own children for profit.
