Chapter 7 - The Hostile Takeover

The final blow came in the courtroom. It wasn't a physical battle, but a legal execution. I walked into the hearing as the primary witness for the prosecution. Weston sat in the defendant's chair, his charcoal suit replaced by an orange jumpsuit. He looked small, his arrogance stripped away, leaving behind a man who finally understood he was irrelevant.

His defense attorney tried to argue that I had entrapped him, that my "takeover" of the company had been a calculated scheme to usurp his authority.

I took the stand, my voice clear and unwavering. I didn't frame him; I presented the facts. I detailed the corruption, the compromised safety of the NICU, and the reckless disregard for human life. When I finished, the courtroom was deathly silent.

The judge didn't look at Weston with sympathy. He looked at him with disdain.

"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, "the testimony provided, combined with the evidence of your financial and medical malpractice, paints a picture of a man who viewed his own children as collateral damage. You are hereby sentenced to the maximum term."

As they led him out, he looked at me—not with hate, but with a terrifying, hollow recognition. He knew he had lost, not because I was luckier, but because I was stronger. I hadn't destroyed him; I had simply allowed his own actions to consume him.
