Chapter 5 - The Interrogation Room Heat

Down at the county precinct, David was learning the hard way what it meant to be stripped of his title, his money, and his illusion of invulnerability.

In the sterile, gray-walled interrogation room, David sat with his tailored suit jacket draped over the back of a metal chair, his white shirt collar unbuttoned, his hair messy. The man who had once commanded boardrooms with a flick of his wrist now stared blankly at a stainless-steel table.

Detective Vance sat across from him, sliding a copy of the high-definition grocery store footage across the table, alongside the forensic audit of Apex Logistics.

“You’re looking at twenty years, David,” Vance said calmly, tapping the folder. “Embezzlement, wire fraud, identity theft regarding your wife’s inheritance, and aggravated assault of a pregnant woman resulting in potential fetal trauma.”

David scoffed, though his voice lacked its usual booming confidence. “It’s a marital dispute. My wife tripped. The media is blowing this out of proportion because of cancel culture. My attorneys will tear this apart.”

“What attorneys?” Vance asked, raising an eyebrow. “Your corporate legal team sent an email this morning terminating your contract for cause, effective immediately. And your personal counsel? He withdrew from the case two hours ago when he realized your retainer check bounced due to frozen assets.”

David flinched as if he had been physically struck. For the first time, the reality of his situation crashed down around him. There were no assistants to fix this. No wealthy friends to buy his way out. No charm left that could talk his way past prison bars.

“She... she pushed me,” David muttered, his voice trembling with pathetic self-pity. “She’s been ungrateful. She ruined everything I built.”

“You built a house of cards on lies and violence, David,” Vance replied coldly, standing up and gathering his files. “And the wind finally caught it.”
