Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

Three Months Later.
Spring arrived early in the Hudson Valley, washing the snow away and replacing it with vibrant green shoots, blossoming cherry trees, and the warm, golden light of a new beginning.
In the sunlit nursery of the peaceful riverside home Sarah and I had rented together, a tiny bundle of perfection lay sleeping peacefully in her crib.
Maya Rose. Ten pounds of sweet baby smells, soft dark hair, and bright, curious eyes that had inherited none of the terror of her past, only the promise of her future.
I sat in the rocking chair by the window, sipping a cup of chamomile tea, watching the sunlight dance across the crib mobile.
A knock sounded at the front door downstairs.
A moment later, Sarah’s voice floated up the stairs. “Elena! You have a visitor!”
When I walked down into the living room, Wyatt stood near the entryway, holding a small, carefully wrapped cardboard box tied with a bright yellow ribbon. He was wearing his usual flannel shirt and work boots, looking slightly embarrassed to be standing in a house full of baby toys and pastel blankets.
“Hi, Wyatt,” I smiled warmly, walking over to greet him. “What’s in the box?”
Wyatt cleared his throat, holding out the package. “Well... I was cleaning out the stockroom at the store last week, and I found something that got misplaced during the inventory sweep back in November.”
I took the box, untied the yellow ribbon, and lifted the lid.
Inside sat a soft, plush, pure white baby blanket. Fourteen dollars stamped on the original tag.
My breath caught in my throat, but the heavy ache in my chest was gone, replaced by a sudden, liberating warmth.
“You didn't have to do that,” I whispered, blinking back happy tears.
“Every baby deserves a blanket that isn't bought under a dark cloud,” Wyatt said softly, his rugged face breaking into a gentle, genuine smile. “And every mother deserves to know she’s safe.”
I stepped forward and hugged him—not out of desperation or fear, but out of profound, heartfelt gratitude. He wrapped his massive arms around me carefully, like a protective brother, anchoring me to a world that was suddenly full of light, possibility, and unconditional love.

Through the front window, past the blossoming trees, the Hudson River flowed steadily toward the open sea, bright and unstoppable under the spring sun.
The nightmare was over. The secrets were exposed. And our new life was finally beginning.
