Chapter 5 - Lorraine’s Front Porch Confrontation

By late afternoon, the panic had spread from the county holding facility to the leafy, affluent suburb where Daniel and I lived.

I had returned to our house—accompanied by a private security detail and two locksmiths—to pack my personal belongings and secure my premarital Brooklyn apartment deed once and for all.

As the movers carried my leather-bound professional ledgers and personal items out to a secure van, a silver luxury sedan tore up the asphalt driveway, tires screeching against the curb.

Lorraine flung open the car door and stormed up the front steps, her face twisted in an ugly, venomous mask of fury. Her designer scarf was half-unraveled, and her hair was windblown.

“You ungrateful, malicious little witch!” Lorraine shrieked, lunging toward me before my security guard stepped firmly into her path, blocking her entry to the porch. “What have you done to my son?! They won't let him post bail! The bank just repossessed my car! They canceled my country club membership!”

I paused, holding a box of personal documents, and looked down at her with cold, clinical detachment.

“Your car was leased under Vale Construction corporate funds using fraudulent expense reports, Lorraine,” I said evenly. “And your country club dues were being paid out of embezzled accounts. You never had money of your own. You were just living on the interest of your son’s criminal enterprise.”

“You ruined him!” she screamed, tears of pure rage spilling down her cheeks as she hammered her fists against the security guard's broad chest. “He is a brilliant contractor! He is a provider! And you’re destroying him over a broken plate?! It was just a plate!”

“It wasn't a plate, Lorraine,” I said, stepping closer to the threshold. “It was an assault. Followed by three months of financial coercion, harassment, and elder abuse threats you directed at me behind closed doors. You thought my quietness was weakness. You thought because I didn't scream back at your dinner table insults that I didn't see what you were doing.”

“Daniel will get out!” she spat, her voice cracking with hysterical defiance. “He’ll find a way! And when he does, he’ll take every penny you have! He’ll leave you with nothing!”

“He won't have a penny left to his name,” a calm, familiar voice interrupted from the driveway.

Arthur Sterling stepped out of a black town car, holding a thick leather portfolio. He walked up the steps, nodding respectfully to me before turning his cold, professional gaze toward Lorraine.

“Allow me to introduce myself, Mrs. Vance,” Arthur said smoothly. “I am Arthur Sterling, senior litigation counsel for Sterling & Vance Forensic Accounting. As of two hours ago, the federal district court has granted an emergency civil forfeiture order over all personal assets, vehicles, and real estate holdings tied to Daniel Vance and associated family members—including the Florida timeshare registered under your name.”

Lorraine staggered backward, her manicured hand flying to her mouth. “That... that’s impossible. That property was a gift!”

“It was purchased with funds diverted from a federal municipal construction grant,” Arthur corrected her, opening the portfolio to display a certified court stamp. “Which means it’s stolen property. The federal marshals will be seizing the keys by tomorrow morning.”

Lorraine stared at Arthur in sheer horror, realization finally dawning on her that the fortress of lies, social posturing, and entitlement she had built her entire identity around had been completely demolished in less than twenty-four hours.

She turned her venomous glare back toward me one last time, her lips trembling. “You’ll pay for this. You hear me? You’ll never work in this city again. You’ll be ruined!”

“I am the person corporations hire when they want to find out who is stealing from them, Lorraine,” I said quietly, walking past her toward my car. “I don't need to work in this city anymore. I own my freedom.”
