Chapter 7 - The Indictment and the Collapse
The legal machinery, once set in motion, ground forward with relentless, crushing momentum.
By the end of the month, the grand jury returned a formal indictment containing twelve distinct felony counts: four counts of wire fraud, three counts of bank fraud, two counts of tax evasion, two counts of grand larceny, and one count of domestic assault resulting in bodily injury.
Daniel’s defense team attempted to negotiate a plea deal, offering a guilty plea on lesser misdemeanor charges in exchange for reduced prison time.
The district attorney’s office brought the offer to me, as both the primary victim and the chief expert witness.
I reviewed the document in my downtown office, sitting across from Arthur Sterling.
“They want five years with the possibility of parole after eighteen months,” Arthur said, watching my expression carefully. “And they’re asking us to waive civil restitution claims against his personal assets.”
I picked up my fountain pen, tapped it twice against the mahogany desk, and slid the paper back across the table.
“Tell them no,” I said flatly.
“Claire, a trial is public, expensive, and emotionally draining,” Arthur cautioned gently. “Are you sure you want to go all the way?”
“I didn't spend twelve years mastering forensic accounting to let a man who thinks violence and intimidation are acceptable substitutes for integrity walk away with an eighteen-month slap on the wrist,” I replied, my voice steady and resolute. “Let the trial proceed. Let every single detail of what he did—from the first forged signature to the night he smashed a plate over my head—become part of the permanent public record.”
