Chapter 7 - The Cleansing Fire

By midnight, the grand estate was entirely quiet once more.
The police had come and gone, taking Adrian away in the back of an unmarked federal transport vehicle, his designer suit wrinkled and his pride reduced to ash. Vanessa had been intercepted trying to board a late-night flight out of the state with what little cash she could scrape together, only to find her passport flagged and her bank accounts locked by midday.
The grand hall had been scrubbed clean. The blood on the marble floor was gone, washed away as if it had never been there.
I sat in my father’s private study on the second floor, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea laced with honey.
Arthur sat across from me in a leather wingback chair, watching me with a mixture of immense pride and lingering concern.
“You handled that with remarkable poise, Victoria,” my father said quietly, resting his elbows on his knees. “Though I wish you hadn't waited until he raised a weapon against you to call me.”
“I needed to be entirely certain,” I said, looking down at the amber liquid in my teacup. “For three years, I wanted to believe that people could be better than their greed. I wanted to build a life independent of your name, Dad. I wanted to be loved for me, not for the vault behind my name.”
Arthur sighed softly, a look of profound paternal sorrow crossing his features. “The world is a harsh place for those who wear their hearts unprotected, my dear. Power doesn't corrupt people; it simply unmasks them. Adrian Vale was wearing a mask of sophistication for three years. All it took was a little pressure for the monster underneath to crawl out.”
“He thought he owned me,” I whispered, lifting my gaze to meet my father’s eyes. “He thought I was his property to control, to punish, to discard.”
“And now?” Arthur asked gently.
A slow, cold smile touched the corners of my lips.
“Now, he is nothing. And I am entirely free.”
Arthur smiled back—a warm, proud expression that he reserved exclusively for me. “Good. Because I had the board draft a new corporate restructuring plan this evening. Vale Global’s remaining physical assets have been acquired for one dollar by Sterling Holdings. Effective tomorrow morning, the entire corporate tower will be rebranded as Sterling-Vale Enterprises, and its primary division will be placed under your direct executive control.”

I blinked, surprised. “My control?”
“You’ve spent three years playing the silent, obedient wife to a mediocre man,” Arthur said firmly. “It’s time the business world learned what happens when a true Sterling takes the helm.”
