Chapter 3 - The Collapse Before Noon

The morning sun over downtown Los Angeles was bright and deceptive, washing the glass facades of the financial district in a brilliant golden sheen. Inside the sleek, glass-walled executive suite on the thirty-second floor of the Vance Technologies building, Garrick was in his element.

He sat behind a massive mahogany desk—purchased with corporate funds, of course—reviewing a draft press release for an upcoming merger that existed only in his head. His tailored designer suit fit him like armor, and the expensive Swiss watch on his wrist ticked with steady, arrogant precision.

The glass door swung open without a knock.

His chief financial officer, a nervous middle-aged man named David who had quietly hated working under Garrick’s erratic management, walked in, holding an open manila folder. His face was entirely devoid of color.

"Garrick, we have a major problem," David said, his voice trembling slightly.

Garrick didn't even look up from his tablet. "If this is about the software licensing delay with the Austin branch, I already told you to push back the deadline—"

"It's not software, Garrick. It's the primary operating accounts," David interrupted, slamming the folder down onto the polished desk. "As of eight o'clock this morning, all corporate revolving credit lines have been frozen by Horizon Wealth Management. Furthermore, our primary commercial lender just called to demand immediate collateral verification on our headquarters building."

Garrick frowned, finally lifting his gaze. A smug, dismissive smile touched his lips. "Frozen? That's impossible. Horizon is our primary institutional backer. I spoke with their vice president last week. Everything is secure. You must be looking at a clerical glitch."

"It's not a glitch," David said grimly, pushing a printed bank statement across the desk. "Look at the master account ownership ledger. Horizon isn't just an institutional backer, Garrick. They’re a wholly-owned asset of a private trust. And the primary controlling shareholder... it’s not you."

Garrick snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the corporate hierarchy tree. As his gaze hit the name listed at the very top of the ownership structure—the entity holding every single voting share and controlling interest in Vance Technologies—the color drained completely from his face.

Hayes Family Holdings LLC.

Registered owner: Eleanor Hayes.

"No," Garrick whispered, his voice pitching upward in sudden panic. "This... this is an administrative error. My wife—Eleanor—she doesn't own this. She’s just... she doesn't know anything about corporate structuring! This is my company! I built this!"

"You didn't build anything, Mr. Vance," a cool, professional voice stated from the doorway.

Garrick and David snapped their heads around. Marcus Sterling, the senior corporate attorney who had overseen the legal architecture of my business empire for decades, walked calmly into the office, flanked by two armed security guards and a process server carrying a heavy briefcase.

"Who the hell let you in here?" Garrick roared, standing up so fast his executive chair slammed violently against the glass wall behind him. "Security! Get these people out of my office!"

"The security team downstairs received their termination notices twenty minutes ago, along with the rest of the building's operational staff," Marcus replied smoothly, adjusting his tie as he walked over to the desk. He placed a thick stack of legal documents right on top of Garrick's unread press releases.

"What is this?" Garrick demanded, his hands shaking as he touched the papers.

"Notice of Default, Corporate Restructuring, and Immediate Revocation of Executive Authority," Marcus listed off, his tone entirely clinical. "Effective immediately, your position as CEO of Vance Technologies is suspended pending a forensic audit of misappropriated corporate funds. Specifically, the unauthorized diversion of company assets for personal and third-party family expenditures—including the ten thousand dollars per month funneled to Miriam Vance over the past thirty-six months."

Garrick’s chest heaved. He looked at Marcus, then at David, and finally down at the legal notices, his mind struggling to bridge the gap between the reality he believed he ruled and the brutal reality now collapsing around him.

"You're lying," Garrick choked out, his voice cracking with rising hysteria. "Eleanor wouldn't... she couldn't do this! She's my wife!"

"Former wife, or soon to be," Marcus corrected coolly. "And she hasn't just frozen your company, Mr. Vance. She has also exercised the primary ownership clause on your residence. The Bel Air estate is currently being cleared of all unauthorized occupants. I suggest you call your mother. She’s going to need help packing her bags."
