Chapter 4 - The Eviction of Illusion

While Garrick was discovering that his corporate empire was nothing more than a rented costume, Miriam Vance was enjoying a peaceful morning in the sun-drenched conservatory of the Bel Air mansion.

Dressed in a pristine white linen robe, she sipped artisanal chamomile tea from a delicate porcelain cup while scrolling through a digital catalog of high-end jewelry. Life was, in her expert opinion, exactly as it should be. The troublesome, unrefined girl Garrick had foolishly married was finally out of the way, having been properly cast out into the obscurity she belonged in. Soon, Garrick would bring home a proper society bride—someone from an established family with a pedigree worthy of the Vance name.

The sharp, heavy ringing of the front doorbell shattered her peaceful morning.

Miriam frowned, setting her teacup down with an audible clink. "Consuela!" she called out, expecting her housekeeper to answer. "Are you deaf? Get the door!"

When no one answered, Miriam huffed in annoyance, stood up, smoothed down her robe, and marched out of the conservatory toward the grand foyer.

She swung the heavy mahogany front door open, fully prepared to berate a delivery driver or an uninvited salesperson.

Instead, she found a county sheriff's deputy standing on the porch, flanked by two professional moving coordinators wearing high-visibility vests and carrying heavy industrial plastic bins.

"Can I help you?" Miriam asked, her voice dripping with condescension. "If this is about deliveries, you need to go around to the service entrance. And frankly, your timing is appalling."

"Are you Miriam Vance?" the deputy asked, holding a clipboard out toward her.

"Yes, I am. And you are standing on private property. My son is the owner of this estate, and I suggest you leave before I have him—"

"Ma'am, you are being served with a formal Writ of Possession and Notice of Immediate Vacate," the deputy interrupted flatly, handing her the paperwork. "This property is owned by Hayes Holdings LLC. The residential occupancy agreement has been permanently revoked."

Miriam stared at the papers, her brow furrowed in utter incomprehension. "What nonsense is this? My son bought this house! We are the Vances! Who authorized this?"

"The sole shareholder and legal owner of the corporate entity," a calm, familiar voice echoed from the driveway.

Miriam snapped her head around. Stepping out of a sleek black town car was me.

I wore a sharply tailored charcoal pantsuit, sunglasses perched on the bridge of my nose, and carried a simple leather portfolio. I didn't look like the defeated, weeping woman who had fled into the night hours earlier. I looked like the person holding the lease on their entire existence.

"You," Miriam gasped, her face turning a mottled shade of crimson. "You vile, scheming little—how dare you show your face here? Get off this property before I call the police!"

"She doesn't need to call the police, Mrs. Vance. They're already here," the deputy reminded her politely.

I walked up the stone steps, stopping just a foot away from Miriam. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. The raw, unfiltered panic flickering in her eyes was all the volume required.

"You called me a worthless wife who should be thankful to be accepted by your family," I said quietly, looking down at her designer linen robe. "A curious sentiment, considering every single thread of clothing you are wearing, every sip of tea you just drank, and every square inch of marble you are standing on was purchased with my money."

"That's a lie!" Miriam shrieked, her voice cracking as her composure completely shattered. "Garrick is a successful CEO! This house belongs to our family! You're nothing! You came from nothing!"

"I came from hard work, Miriam. Something neither you nor your son has ever understood," I replied evenly. I turned toward the moving coordinators. "Begin the inventory. All personal effects belonging to unauthorized occupants are to be boxed and placed at the curb by noon."

"You can't do this!" Miriam screamed, lunging forward as if to scratch my face, but the deputy instantly stepped between us, blocking her path with professional precision.

"Get your hands off me!" she wailed, her aristocratic veneer dissolving into frantic, ugly desperation. "Garrick will destroy you! He’ll sue you into oblivion! You'll pay for this!"

"Garrick is currently discovering that his entire corporate identity is built on a foundation of sand," I said, turning my back on her as I stepped across the threshold and into the grand foyer. "You have until twelve o'clock to pack your things, Miriam. After that, the locks change permanently."
