Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Feedback Loop

By the third day, the narrative began to shift. I received an email from a mutual friend—a thinly veiled "concerned" message about my "sudden breakdown" and how I had "taken money that wasn't mine." They were playing the long game.
I didn't reply. Instead, I watched the social media updates from afar. Daniel had posted a photo of himself looking forlorn, captioned with platitudes about "mental health" and "protecting one's family." Vanessa was in the comments, reinforcing the lie, painting me as a volatile, unstable woman who had stolen from the very man who "supported her through her episodes."
It was a brilliant, sociopathic move. They were framing my disappearance as a flight from reality, knowing that if I surfaced now, I would be viewed with skepticism.
But I had the ledger.
I spent the day at a private investigator's office downtown. We sat in a room that smelled of stale coffee and old paper. The investigator, a man named Miller who looked like he’d seen every variety of human misery, went through my files.
"They're not just taking your money, Claire," he said, tapping a document. "They're laundering money through your father’s estate to cover the losses in the beauty studio. This isn't just theft. This is racketeering. If you go to the authorities with this, their entire operation collapses."
He looked at me over his glasses. "Are you prepared for the fire? Once you drop this on them, they won't just try to gaslight you. They'll try to destroy you."

I thought of the coffee on my face. I thought of Vanessa’s smile while I screamed. "They already tried to destroy me," I said, my voice cold. "Now it's my turn."
I walked out of the office and into the bustling city air. I felt invisible, a ghost moving through a crowd of people who had no idea that I was the catalyst for an impending explosion. I checked my phone. Still nothing from Daniel. He was still waiting for me to apologize. The hubris was their greatest weakness, and I intended to exploit it until there was nothing left.
