Chapter 6 - The Weight of Chains

The transition from the boardroom to the interrogation room was a blur of flashing lights and clicking handcuffs. I watched from the doorway as Daniel was pushed into a metal chair, his expensive suit rumpled, his face a mask of primal, impotent rage. He wasn't the man who had poured the coffee anymore; he was a man trapped by his own greed.

Vanessa was in the room next door, screaming that she had been misled, that it was all Daniel’s idea. Hearing her turn on him was almost poetic. She was the one who had buttered her toast while I burned; now, she was the one clawing at the walls to save her own skin.

I sat in the hallway, clutching a bottle of water. My hands were shaking, not from fear, but from the sudden, overwhelming release of adrenaline. The police captain walked over, holding a copy of my medical report.

"Ms. Claire," he said, his tone respectful. "This report, combined with the financial data you provided, gives us more than enough for a felony indictment. Not just for the fraud, but for the assault. We have the witness statement from your neighbor who heard the scream, and your own testimony. They aren't walking away from this."

I felt a phantom sensation on my cheek—a reminder of the pain—but it no longer felt like a wound. It felt like a trophy. I had survived the fire. I had survived their gaslighting. And now, the law was doing exactly what I had spent months planning.

"I want them to know," I said, looking up at him. "I want them to know that I didn't break. I didn't run away. I destroyed them from the inside out."
