Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Two months later, the criminal trial of The State v. Adrian Lockridge, Vanessa Miller, and Celeste Lockridge commenced at the State Supreme Courthouse.

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. National television crews broadcasted the proceedings live to over twenty million viewers. The story of the poor girl who turned out to be a powerful heiress, destroying the greedy family that tried to steal her child, had captivated the entire nation.

I sat in the front row of the gallery beside my father, wearing a charcoal wool suit, holding my father’s hand as the prosecution laid out the evidence.

Adrian, Vanessa, and Celeste sat at the defense table with three separate public defenders. Adrian looked like a ghost of his former self—he had lost thirty pounds, his cheeks were sunken, and he flinched every time the prosecutor mentioned his name.

The lead prosecutor, a fierce woman named DA Evelyn Reed, stood before the jury box.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,” Evelyn announced, pointing toward the defense table. “What you see sitting before you is not a tragic family dispute. It is a calculated, heartless criminal syndicate motivated by pure, unadulterated greed.”

Evelyn walked over to the evidence table and picked up an audio recorder.

“We have obtained, through federal wiretaps and digital forensics, a recorded phone conversation between Adrian Lockridge and Vanessa Miller, taken three weeks before Claire Whitmore gave birth.”

Evelyn pressed play.

Adrian’s voice echoed loudly through the high-ceilinged courtroom:

“Once she pops the kid out, we hand her the forged papers. She has no money, no family, and no lawyer. She’ll be too terrified to fight back. We’ll throw five thousand dollars at her to get out of the city, and if she makes a noise, I’ll have my mother file a restraining order against her for harassment. By the time she realizes what happened, the baby will be legally yours, Vanessa, and we’ll use the kid’s trust setup to pull funding from my firm’s accounts.”

Vanessa’s voice responded: “What if she calls the police?”

Adrian’s recorded laugh was chilling: “Who are the police going to believe? A broke, pathetic orphan with no background, or a senior partner at Lockridge Logistics? She’s nobody. She’s nothing.”

The entire courtroom gasped. Several jury members shook their heads in utter disgust, looking at Adrian with intense loathing.

Adrian buried his face in his hands on the defense table, trembling uncontrollably.

Then, DA Reed called her star witness for the defense's cross-examination: Vanessa Miller herself, who had agreed to testify against Adrian in a last-minute attempt to lessen her own sentence.

Vanessa walked up to the witness stand in her bright orange prison jumpsuit, her eyes fixed entirely on the floor.

“Ms. Miller,” DA Reed asked. “Who came up with the plan to forge the surrogacy documents?”

“Adrian,” Vanessa said quietly, her voice trembling. “He forged Claire’s signature using a digital light pad he bought online. He told me that Claire’s father was dead and that she had no one in the world to protect her.”

“And what was the ultimate goal?”

“He wanted to use the baby to secure a family trust loan,” Vanessa confessed, tears falling onto her uniform. “He was broke. Lockridge Logistics was already failing, and he had embezzled over four hundred thousand dollars from company funds to buy me a condo and lease luxury cars. He thought if he had a baby with legal documentation, he could apply for an emergency family hardship line of credit.”

The prosecution turned to the jury. “No further questions.”
