Chapter 8 - The Verdict and Reckoning

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom opened and the jury walked back inside, the entire room stood up in breathless anticipation.

Judge Robert Sterling slammed his gavel down. “Will the defendants please rise for the verdict?”

Adrian, Celeste, and Vanessa stood up slowly, supported by their public defenders.

The jury foreman, an older man with stern eyes, stepped forward holding the official verdict form.

“On Count One: Aggravated Kidnapping of a Newborn,” the foreman read firmly, “we find the defendant, Adrian Lockridge... GUILTY.”

A loud gasp washed through the gallery.

“On Count Two: Grand Forgery and Extortion... GUILTY.”

“On Count Three: Corporate Embezzlement and Wire Fraud... GUILTY.”

“On Count Four: Criminal Conspiracy... GUILTY.”

Adrian’s legs gave out, and he slammed heavily back into his chair, weeping hysterically like a child.

The foreman continued reading:

“Regarding defendant Celeste Lockridge: On counts of Conspiracy to Kidnap and Accessory to Grand Fraud... GUILTY.”

Celeste let out a shrill, piercing scream before fainting onto the hardwood floor. Court bailiffs immediately rushed over to lift her up.

“Regarding defendant Vanessa Miller: On counts of Criminal Conspiracy and Filing False Legal Claims... GUILTY.”

Judge Sterling slammed his gavel down again, his face grim as he looked down at the convicted criminals.

“Adrian Lockridge,” Judge Sterling declared, his voice echoing with absolute severity. “Your actions demonstrate a total absence of human empathy, honor, and moral decency. You preyed upon a woman who loved you, attempted to steal her child at her most vulnerable moment, and engaged in systemic fraud.”

Judge Sterling picked up his pen.

“I sentence you to thirty-five years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first twenty-five years.”

Adrian screamed out in agony, beating his fists against the desk. “No! Please! Claire! Save me! Claire!”

“Celeste Lockridge,” the judge continued, ignoring the outbursts. “For your role in this grotesque scheme, I sentence you to fifteen years in state prison.”

“Vanessa Miller, taking into account your cooperation with the state, I sentence you to eight years in state prison.”

“Bailiffs, remand the prisoners into custody immediately!”

The court erupted into chaos as reporters scrambled for the exit doors. Guards grabbed Adrian by the shoulders, pulling him up from his chair as he fought wildly, his eyes locking onto mine across the courtroom.

“CLAIRE! PLEASE!” Adrian shrieked, tears and sweat soaking his face. “I STILL LOVE YOU! DON’T DO THIS TO ME! CLAIRE!”

I stood beside my father, unmoving, completely serene. I looked at Adrian with calm, quiet eyes as he was dragged through the rear holding doors, his desperate screams fading into nothingness.
