Chapter 4 - The Interrogation Room Showdown

Under the harsh fluorescent lights of the downtown precinct’s interrogation room, Evelyn Ward sat with her arms tightly crossed, her nose held high in an arrogant display of indignant refusal. Across the metal table sat Detective Cole and a junior investigator, flanked by a court-appointed public defender who looked thoroughly exhausted.
“I demand to make a phone call,” Evelyn snapped, tapping her manicured fingernails against the table. “This is an outrage! My son is a billionaire executive, and you are treating me like a common criminal over a sick child!”
Detective Cole leaned forward, sliding a manila folder across the table and opening it up. He didn't raise his voice; his tone was dangerously calm.
“Mrs. Ward, let’s talk about what constitutes a common criminal,” Cole said smoothly. “Let’s talk about thallium rat poison. Specifically, how a lethal compound restricted to commercial agricultural use ended up inside your six-year-old granddaughter’s favorite rag doll.”
Evelyn scoffed, turning her head away. “I don't know anything about rat poison. The house is old. Pests get in. If the child chewed on something dirty, that’s poor supervision on her mother’s part.”
“Is that right?” Detective Cole asked. He reached over and tapped a button on a small media player resting on the desk.
The audio speaker crackled to life.
“...just slip a little bit more into her evening broth,” Evelyn’s unmistakable voice echoed clearly through the small interrogation room. “If the mother complains, tell her it’s just vitamins for her weakness. Once the child is out of the way, Michael will finally put the estate in my name, and we can sell the house.”
A second voice—Daniel’s—responded on the recording: “Make sure you don't leave fingerprints on the container, Mother. Michael’s auditing the accounts next week.”
The color drained entirely from Evelyn’s face. Her arrogant posture collapsed in an instant, her jaw dropping open as she stared at the speaker in sheer, unadulterated horror.
“Where... where did you get that?” Evelyn stammered, her voice suddenly sounding old, frail, and terrified.
“Your son’s smart-home security system,” Detective Cole said quietly. “Every room. Every conversation. Every single malicious act you and your son plotted over the last six months was recorded, timestamped, and uploaded to a secure cloud server.”
The door to the observation room swung open, and Daniel was pushed inside by a uniformed officer, looking pale, sweating profusely, and frantically loosening his tie.
“Mom, they found the ledger in my apartment,” Daniel blurted out in a panic, completely unaware that Evelyn had just been cornered with the audio recording. “They found the offshore wire receipts! We’re finished! Michael set us up!”

Detective Cole looked between the mother and son, offering a cold, satisfied smile.
“Set up?” Cole said softly. “No, Mr. Ward. You didn't get set up. You just walked right into a cage of your own making.”
