Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Master Plan
Over the next week, as Clara and Lily steadily recovered under 24-hour medical supervision, the full scope of Evelyn and Daniel’s conspiracy was laid bare by the forensic audit and police investigation.
Arthur Sterling sat across from Michael in the hospital’s private consultation room, reviewing thick binders of financial documents.
“It’s worse than we thought, Michael,” Arthur said, sliding a document across the table. “Your mother and brother didn't just siphon cash from the family trust. They orchestrated a multi-layered identity theft scheme.”
Michael skimmed the pages. His eyes narrowed.
“They were liquidating my late father’s commercial real estate portfolio,” Michael said, his voice dangerously quiet.
“Exactly,” Arthur nodded. “They used forged power-of-attorney documents—notarized by a corrupt paralegal in downtown Denver—to sign over ownership of three commercial plazas and your childhood home into a shell company controlled jointly by Evelyn and Daniel. Their plan was to declare Clara mentally incapacitated through manipulated medical reports, strip you of guardianship over Lily, and flee the country with over four million dollars in liquidated assets.”
“And they thought poisoning Lily and starving Clara would speed up the process,” Michael said, the realization settling over him like a block of ice.
“Yes. They believed Clara’s deteriorating health would look like natural postpartum depression and malnutrition, while Lily’s chronic toxicity would be diagnosed as an incurable childhood illness or accidental poisoning,” Arthur explained grimly. “They thought they had covered every single base.”
“They missed one thing,” Michael replied, standing up and walking over to the window.
