Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Network

The morning after Victoria’s arrest, the legal machinery moved with terrifying speed.
Arthur’s military legal JAG officers, working in tandem with civilian federal prosecutors, began unravelling the elaborate web of fraud Victoria had constructed over the years. It turned out that Victoria’s interference wasn't just limited to our marriage; it extended deep into the Vance family estate and financial holdings.
Around 10:00 AM, the doorbell rang.
Expecting Detective Vance or a legal courier, Arthur opened the door. Standing on the porch wasn't a police officer, but a middle-aged man in a tailored gray suit holding a leather briefcase.
“Captain Arthur Vance?” the man asked politely.
“Yes. And you are?”
“My name is Julian Thorne. I’m a senior partner at Thorne & Associates, specializing in estate trust litigation. I represent your late father’s primary holdings.”
Arthur frowned, stepping back to let him enter. “My father passed away five years ago. His estate was settled.”
“That is precisely why I’m here, Captain,” Julian said, stepping into the entryway and placing his briefcase on the hall table. He opened it and pulled out a thick stack of certified documents. “Your mother, acting as executor of the Henry Vance Family Trust, systematically diverted over four million dollars in real estate and liquid capital into offshore accounts over the last four years—including the very house you are standing in.”
I walked out from the kitchen, holding a cup of tea, listening closely.
“She claimed the properties were being managed for family preservation,” Julian continued, adjusting his glasses. “In reality, she was using the trust to fund her high-society lifestyle, while simultaneously preparing legal maneuvers to disinherit you and any potential heirs if you married outside her approved social circle.”
Arthur looked at the financial audits spread across the coffee table. The pieces of the puzzle were finally falling into place. Victoria’s obsession with controlling our lives wasn't just about snobbery or maternal tyranny; it was about financial self-preservation. If we had children, her control over the multi-million-dollar trust would dissolve under statutory inheritance laws.
“Can the trust be frozen?” Arthur asked coldly.
May you like
“It already has been, Captain,” Julian smiled faintly. “As of 9:00 AM this morning, a federal judge granted an emergency asset freeze on all accounts controlled by Victoria Vance. She cannot post bail using trust funds, and she cannot liquidate a single square foot of Vance property.”
Julian packed his briefcase, nodded respectfully to both of us, and headed back out the door, leaving Arthur and me standing in the center of a living room that was finally, truly ours.
