Chapter 6 - The Arraignment and the Mask Slips

Three days later, the municipal courthouse in downtown Boston was buzzing with media attention.
News of an Army Captain returning from deployment to discover his mother had faked his death and terrorized his pregnant wife had leaked to local press outlets, transforming the domestic dispute into a national scandal.
Arthur and I arrived through a private entrance provided by the courthouse marshals, avoiding the sea of camera crews and reporters camped outside the front steps.
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
When the bailiff called the court to order and Judge Harrison entered, the doors to the holding cells opened.
Victoria Vance was led into the courtroom wearing an orange jumpsuit.
The transformation was absolute. Gone was the pristine silver coiffure, the designer Chanel suits, and the untouchable aura of high-society aristocracy. Her hair was pulled back into a simple, unstyled band, her face devoid of makeup, and her shoulders visibly slumped beneath the coarse fabric of the prison-issue uniform.
As she walked toward the defense table, her eyes swept across the gallery.
For a fraction of a second, her gaze locked onto mine.
There was no apology in her eyes. No remorse. Only a burning, toxic hatred that made my breath catch in my throat.
She sat down beside her court-appointed public defender—having discovered that every single one of her high-priced private attorneys had recused themselves once the federal forgery and embezzlement charges became public.
The prosecutor laid out the formal indictments:
Forgery of federal and military documents.
Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Intentional infliction of severe emotional distress on a protected individual (pregnant minor/spouse).
Grand larceny and corporate trust fraud.
When Judge Harrison asked Victoria how she pleaded to the charges, she stood up slowly.
“Not guilty, Your Honor,” Victoria said, her voice shaking with suppressed fury. She pointed a trembling finger directly toward our table. “This is a conspiracy! My son has been brainwashed by an opportunistic interloper who manipulated him while he was vulnerable! I was only protecting my family!”
“Silence, Mrs. Vance,” Judge Harrison commanded, his voice sharp and absolute. “You are facing over twenty years in federal penitentiaries. Save your theatrical speeches for the jury.”
She was denied bail without hesitation, given her status as a flight risk with access to offshore assets that were currently frozen.

As the bailiffs led her back out of the courtroom, Victoria cast one final, venomous look over her shoulder.
It was the look of a woman who still believed she was the victim. But as the heavy steel doors closed behind her, I knew the illusion was gone forever.
