Chapter 4 - The Corporate War Begins

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the Mercer family scandal had spread through Atlanta’s high-society social registry like wildfire.

Clara sat in the sunlit breakfast nook of Daniel’s modern townhouse—which he owned entirely under his own name, independent of his father’s firm—watching the morning news on her tablet.

Although Daniel had refrained from posting the footage online, several guests at the wedding had recorded the entire nineteen-minute confrontation on their smartphones. By midnight, clips of Daniel defending Emma and revealing the $26,500 debt had accumulated over two million views across TikTok and Instagram.

The press was calling it “The Wedding Reckoning.”

Daniel walked into the kitchen wearing a sharp dark suit, setting a fresh cup of coffee in front of Clara before leaning over to kiss her cheek.

“How did you sleep?” he asked quietly.

“Better than I have in years,” Clara admitted, wrapping her hands around the warm mug. “Emma is still asleep upstairs. She slept for ten hours straight without a single nightmare.” She looked up at him, her eyes filled with concern. “Daniel... what happens to your job now?”

Daniel was the Chief Operations Officer at Mercer Capital, a venture management firm founded by his grandfather. His father, Harold, served as Chairman of the Board, while Chloe held a high-salaried position as Vice President of Public Relations.

“Harold called an emergency board meeting for 10:00 a.m.,” Daniel said, taking a sip of his coffee. “He thinks he’s going to use his position as Chairman to fire me and strip my equity shares.”

Clara reached out, gripping his wrist. “Can he do that?”

Daniel smiled, a cold, sharp expression that made him look remarkably like the strategic mind he was in the corporate world.

“My grandfather didn't trust Harold,” Daniel revealed softly. “When Grandfather passed five years ago, he left fifty-one percent of the voting shares in a private trust that converts directly to me upon my marriage—provided I married a non-corporate partner of sound moral standing.”

Clara’s jaw dropped slightly. “Your grandfather planned this?”

“Grandfather knew Harold was a weak, greedy man controlled by Mother’s vanity,” Daniel explained. “He knew Harold would run the firm into the ground to maintain their fake lifestyle. The board meeting this morning isn't going to be my execution, Clara. It’s going to be theirs.”

At 9:45 a.m., Daniel walked into the glass-walled executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of Mercer Tower in downtown Atlanta.

Harold sat at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by Chloe and five senior board members. Chloe looked visibly disheveled, her eyes red-rimmed from an all-night social media panic as major sponsors dropped her public relations campaigns one by one.

“Ah, Daniel,” Harold said, forcing a stern, authoritative posture as his son entered. “Sit down. The board has called this meeting to address your unprovoked public defamation of the Mercer name and your gross breach of fiduciary duty.”

Chloe sneered from her chair. “You ruined everything, Daniel. Mother hasn't stopped crying, and three of our primary investors called this morning demanding their capital back!”

Daniel didn't sit down. He stood at the foot of the table, pulling a thick leather portfolio from his briefcase and setting it flat on the wood.

“The investors didn't call because I defamed the family,” Daniel said smoothly, looking around the room at the five silent board members. “They called because they saw the public proof that Harold has been siphoning client funds to pay for private country club dues, designer dresses, and sixty-thousand-dollar weekend trips to St. Barts.”

“That’s lie!” Harold shouted, slamming his hand on the table. “Security, remove him!”

“Security isn't coming, Harold,” Daniel replied calmly. He opened the portfolio and slid five copies of a certified trust ledger across the table to the board members.

“As of 8:00 a.m. today, my marriage to Clara Brooks was legally registered with the state,” Daniel announced. “Under the terms of the William Mercer Testamentary Trust, fifty-one percent of all voting stock in Mercer Capital has officially vested in my name.”

The five board members immediately picked up the documents, their eyes scanning the legal stamps with sudden, intense focus.

“As majority shareholder,” Daniel continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority, “my first executive act is the immediate termination of Harold Mercer as Chairman and Chloe Mercer as VP of Public Relations for gross negligence, embezzlement, and breach of trust.”

Chloe gasped, leaping out of her chair. “You can't fire me! I’m your sister!”

May you like

“You’re an incompetent bully who used company credit cards to fund your personal harassment campaigns,” Daniel said, his eyes as hard as flint. “You have thirty minutes to clear your desk before corporate security escorts you out of the building.”

Harold slumped back into his leather chair, his face turning an ash-gray color, looking suddenly thirty years older as his empire fell apart in front of his eyes.
