Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Bite

Two weeks passed.
The dust settled over Mercer Capital as Daniel took full control of the firm, executing a comprehensive internal audit that exposed millions of dollars in personal waste accumulated by his father.
Under Daniel’s leadership, the firm reorganized, stabilizing its core assets and reassuring nervous investors.
Meanwhile, Clara returned to her work at the hospital’s pediatric trauma unit, feeling a sense of lighthearted freedom she hadn't experienced in a decade. Emma was back in school, thriving in her fourth-grade class, her confidence soaring as Daniel attended every soccer practice and parent-teacher conference, sitting proudly in the front row.
However, wounded predators do not go quietly into the night.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Clara was finishing her shift at the hospital when her phone buzzed with an urgent text from Emma’s elementary school administration office.
“Mrs. Mercer, your sister-in-law Chloe Mercer is currently in the main lobby requesting emergency pickup for Emma, claiming there is a family medical crisis. We require your immediate authorization.”
Clara’s heart stopped. The blood roared in her ears.
She sprinted out of the nurses’ station, barely stopping to grab her coat, and dialled Daniel on speed dial as she ran toward her car in the parking garage.
“Daniel!” Clara choked out, her voice pitching into absolute panic. “Chloe is at Emma’s school! She’s trying to take her!”
Over the line, Daniel’s breath hitched, followed instantly by the sharp sound of his desk chair crashing back. “I’m five minutes away from the school right now. I’m calling our private security detail and the police. Do not speed, Clara. I will be there before she even touches the door handle.”
Three minutes later, Chloe stood inside the glass vestibule of St. Jude’s Elementary School, wearing oversized sunglasses and a trench coat, tapping her foot impatiently against the linoleum floor.
The school receptionist, a sharp elderly woman named Mrs. Higgins, sat behind bulletproof glass, holding Emma safely inside the locked inner office.
“Look, lady,” Chloe hissed, leaning toward the intercom speaker. “I am her aunt! Her grandmother is in the hospital, and I need to take her right now! You are holding a child against her family’s wishes!”
“Our policy requires written consent from Mrs. Mercer or Mr. Mercer, ma'am,” Mrs. Higgins said coolly, not budging an inch.
The heavy exterior doors swept open, and Daniel stormed into the lobby, followed closely by two uniformed Atlanta police officers and Ethan Vance—a private security specialist Daniel had hired to oversee his family’s safety after the wedding.
Chloe turned around, her face twisting into a mask of frantic, venomous desperation.
“Daniel!” Chloe cried out, instantly trying to change her tone. “Thank God you’re here! Mother had a panic attack this morning, and she just wanted to see Emma—she wanted to apologize!”
Daniel walked right up to his sister. He didn't touch her, but his presence was so towering and oppressive that Chloe backed straight up against the glass wall.
“You think I don't know why you're here, Chloe?” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Your credit cards were canceled yesterday. The bank served an eviction notice on your Buckhead condo this morning. You thought if you took Emma, you could bargain for a settlement.”
“No! That’s not true!” Chloe shrieked, tears of pathetic self-pity running down her cheeks. “You ruined my life, Daniel! You took my job! You took Dad’s company! Mother is sitting in a cheap apartment eating TV dinners because of that nurse and her stupid brat!”
The two police officers stepped forward.
“Chloe Mercer?” the lead officer asked. “You are under arrest for attempted unlawful custody interference, criminal trespassing, and violation of an active protective order filed by Daniel Mercer.”
As the officers pulled Chloe’s hands behind her back and clicked the metal handcuffs into place, the inner office door opened.

Clara ran into the lobby, breathless, and immediately scooped Emma into her arms, pulling the girl tight against her heart. Emma wrapped her small arms around her mother’s neck, hiding her face in Clara’s shoulder.
Chloe was dragged past them, screaming profanities into the quiet school lobby, her social status, her wealth, and her dignity completely shattered forever.
