Chapter 6 - Collapsing Castles

Within forty-eight hours, the illusion had completely disintegrated.

Without Sarah’s financial cushion, Arthur’s hidden debts and corporate liabilities surfaced with terrifying speed. Creditors swarmed his failing accounts, freezing his assets and seizing his remaining personal property. The high-society friends Eleanor had boasted to suddenly vanished, blocking their calls and slamming doors in their faces the moment they realized the Vance family was destitute.

Valerie, accustomed to an extravagant lifestyle funded by Arthur’s fabricated wealth, threw a furious, tearful tantrum in the cramped, cheap motel room they were forced to temporarily shelter in.

“You lied to me!” Valerie screamed, throwing a plastic water bottle across the dingy hotel room. “You told me you were a wealthy consultant living on the Upper East Side! I’m pregnant with your child, and you’re living in a roach motel?!”

“Valerie, please, let me explain—” Arthur stammered, looking broken, aged ten years in a matter of days.

“Don’t touch me!” she spat, packing her designer bags. “I’m calling my mother. I am not raising a child with a bankrupt fraud.”

Meanwhile, Eleanor sat in a corner of the cramped room, staring blankly at the stained wallpaper. The matriarch who had ruled her household with an iron fist of arrogance and condescension was now entirely powerless. Stripped of her status, her luxury, and her pride, she realized the bitter truth: she had driven away the only person who had ever genuinely cared for their family’s well-being, replacing her with grasping opportunists who abandoned them the second the money ran out.

Arthur tried calling Sarah’s cell phone dozens of times. Each call went straight to voicemail. When he finally went to her hospital to beg for mercy, security intercepted him at the lobby doors, politely but firmly informing him that Dr. Vance had requested a formal restraining order against harassment. He was escorted off the premises before he could even catch a glimpse of her.
