Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

Six months later, spring had returned to New York City, bringing with it a vibrant renewal of life and color.

Sarah walked briskly through the grand lobby of the medical center, her white lab coat billowing softly behind her. She had just finished presenting a keynote paper at a national pharmaceutical symposium, and congratulatory notes filled her inbox from colleagues around the world. Her research was saving lives, her career was soaring to unprecedented heights, and her heart was entirely at peace.

Word had occasionally trickled back through mutual acquaintances about what had become of her former family. Arthur had filed for bankruptcy and taken a low-level administrative job in a distant suburb, utterly broken by his failures. Valerie had left him before the baby was born, taking what little alimony she could squeeze out of him. And Eleanor was living in a modest, cramped assisted-living facility, her grand social standing reduced to bitter memories and endless regrets.

Sarah never gloated. Their downfall had not been her doing; it was simply the natural consequence of building a life on lies, cruelty, and exploitation. She had simply removed her support, and gravity had done the rest.

Stopping by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the hospital lounge, Sarah looked out over the sprawling, beautiful expanse of the Manhattan skyline. The morning sun illuminated the city in a brilliant, golden glow.

She took a deep, steady breath, feeling the vibrant rhythm of the city and the absolute freedom of her own spirit. She had traded a gilded cage for an open sky, and for the first time in her life, every single horizon was entirely hers to conquer.
