Chapter 5 - The Walls Crumble

The fallout was immediate and spectacular. Within forty-eight hours, the news of the arrest hit the papers. The headline—Prominent Banker and Matriarch Arrested in Domestic Torture Scandal—stripped away the veneer of the "perfect Sterling family."
The courtroom proceedings for the bail hearing were the first time I saw them since the kitchen. Samuel looked smaller. His bespoke suit was wrinkled, and his eyes, usually so calculated and cold, darted around the room, desperate to find someone who would still believe his lies. Joyce, however, was a different story. She looked at me from the defendant's box with a venomous, unrepentant glare that chilled me to the bone.
Their lawyer, a man who charged by the hour what I used to earn in a month, tried to move for a dismissal based on my "documented history of instability." But the prosecutor was ready.
He didn't just read the files; he played the audio.
The courtroom fell into a stunned, horrified silence as the speakers filled with the sound of Joyce’s voice, cold and clinical, discussing the boiling oil as if it were a household chore. "Make sure she doesn't ruin the floor, Samuel. It took me all morning to wax it."

I watched the jury. I saw the shift—from skepticism to raw, visceral disgust. Samuel hung his head. He knew. The leverage he held over my life was gone, and he had nothing left but his own cowardice. The judge denied bail, citing the overwhelming evidence of flight risk and extreme danger to the plaintiff. As they were led out in handcuffs, Samuel looked back at me one last time, his eyes pleading for a mercy he had never once offered.
I looked through him, as if he were made of glass.
