Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Rat Race

While they sat in holding, the process of their destruction continued, but it wasn't just coming from the law—it was coming from within.

Samuel and Joyce were in separate cells, but their lawyers were playing a game of chicken. I received a message through my legal counsel: Joyce wanted a deal. She was prepared to turn state’s witness against Samuel, claiming he was the mastermind who manipulated her into "managing" me.

I went to the visitation room, not to see Samuel, but to see Joyce.

She looked tired, her hair messy, her makeup gone. She didn't look like the woman who hissed threats in my ear. She looked like a trapped animal.

"I can help you, Elena," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I can tell them how he threatened me. He said if I didn't help him with the accounts, he’d put me in a state home. He forced me to be cruel."

I leaned forward, my voice low and steady. "You chose to pick up that pot, Joyce. You chose to watch me bleed. You didn't do it because you were afraid of him. You did it because you hated me for being a person, not an extension of your house."

She started to cry—a jagged, ugly sound. "We were a family!"

"No," I corrected her. "You were a parasite, and he was the host. Now, the host has been cut off."

I stood up to leave. She lunged for the glass, screaming, but I was already walking toward the door. I had realized something crucial: their cruelty had been a partnership, and now that the partnership was failing, the toxicity would consume them both. I didn't need to lift a finger to punish them. I only needed to let them tear each other apart in the face of the truth.
