Chapter 6 - THE CUSTODY AMBUSH

Just as we began to breathe a sigh of relief, Agatha struck back with the desperate fury of a dying animal.
At 3:00 PM on Thursday afternoon, two process servers arrived at the gates of Bruce’s estate, delivering an urgent court summons from the Riverside County Family Court: EMERGENCY HEARING FOR TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP AND CUSTODY.
Agatha had hired the most ruthless family law firm in Southern California.
The court petition was brutal. It claimed that I was an "unemployed, mentally unstable mother" who had fallen under the influence of a wealthy donor, accusing me of alienating my children from their paternal family and exposing them to erratic living conditions.
Worse, Agatha had attached a fraudulent psychiatric evaluation signed by a corrupt doctor in Palm Springs, claiming I suffered from severe clinical depression and emotional instability following David’s death.
"She’s trying to drag you into a mudslinging match," Arthur Vance said as we reviewed the court documents in Bruce’s study. "She knows her financial crimes are catching up with her, so she’s using the children as leverage. She thinks if she gets temporary custody, she can force you to sign a non-disclosure agreement and drop the financial audit."
"She will never touch my children again!" I yelled, my voice ringing across the room. The meek, terrified maid who had scrubbed Agatha’s floors for six years was gone. In her place stood a mother who would burn the world down before letting her daughters suffer another second of abuse. "I will go to that court and tell the judge everything!"
"You won't go alone," Bruce said, stepping forward, his eyes blazing with cold determination. "And you won't just defend yourself. We are going to make sure Agatha Shields walks out of that courtroom in handcuffs."
The emergency hearing was set for 9:00 AM the following morning at the Riverside County Courthouse.
That night, nobody slept. Bruce’s legal team worked through the night, assembling a mountain of evidence: medical records, bank traces, witness statements from former employees of the Crestview Foundation, and the audio files recorded during the charity luncheon.
At 8:00 AM the next morning, three black luxury SUVs rolled out of Bruce’s estate, heading toward the courthouse.
When we arrived, the marble steps of the courthouse were surrounded by news crews and reporters. Agatha had tipped off the media, attempting to frame the story as a wealthy tycoon stealing a grieving grandmother’s precious granddaughters.
Agatha stood on the upper steps, wearing a black silk suit and pearl necklace, surrounded by her high-priced legal team. She held a tissue to her eyes, putting on a masterful performance of a heartbroken grandmother for the flashing cameras.

As my car pulled up, Agatha turned toward us, her lips curling into a cruel, triumphant smirk that only I could see.
"Get ready, Gabrielle," Bruce whispered beside me as the driver opened our door. "Today, her empire falls."
