Chapter 8 - THE FALL OF CRESTVIEW

"Your Honor!" Jonathan Vance stammered, his face pale. "My... my client was under extreme emotional stress—"
"Silence, counselor!" Judge Sterling roared, slamming her gavel down three times. "I have sat on this bench for twenty-four years, and rarely have I seen such a sickening display of greed, abuse, and deception!"
Judge Sterling stood up, holding the legal documents in her hand.
"Not only is this petition for emergency custody denied with prejudice," she declared, "but I am issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order against Agatha Shields. She is prohibited from coming within two thousand yards of Gabrielle Shields or her three daughters."
She looked over at the back of the courtroom, where two armed Deputy Sheriffs were already standing by the doors.
"Furthermore," Judge Sterling continued, "based on the evidence of grand larceny, probate fraud, and filing a false police report presented here today, I am referring this matter directly to the District Attorney's Office for immediate criminal prosecution!"
The deputies stepped forward, their leather boots heavy against the hardwood floor as they approached the petitioner’s table.
"Agatha Shields," the lead deputy announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for felony wire fraud, grand larceny, and filing a false police report. Stand up and place your hands behind your back."
"No! Get your hands off me!" Agatha screamed, thrashing wildly as the deputy clicked the steel cuffs around her manicured wrists. "Do you know who I am?! I am Agatha Shields! I control Palm Springs! Gabrielle, you ungrateful little bitch! I gave you a roof over your head!"
The news reporters in the gallery jumped up, their cameras flashing rapidly, capturing every second of Agatha’s ugly meltdown as she was dragged down the center aisle of the courtroom in chains.
Outside the courtroom, the fall of Crestview was swift and complete.
Within forty-eight hours, federal agents raided the Crestview Charitable Foundation headquarters in Palm Springs, seizing every server, file cabinet, and bank account. Five board members who had aided Agatha in laundering money were arrested in early morning raids.
The news hit national headlines: "PALM SPRINGS SOCIALITE ARRESTED: $15M EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME EXPOSED BY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW."
I stood on the balcony of Bruce’s estate, watching the evening sun dip below the Pacific horizon. For the first time in six years, the weight pressing down on my chest was gone. The nightmare was finally over.
Bruce walked out onto the balcony, carrying two glasses of apple cider. He handed one to me, stepping up beside me to look at the sunset.
"Agatha’s bail was denied this afternoon," Bruce said quietly. "She’ll be holding in Riverside County Jail until her trial."

"I thought I would feel happy," I whispered, holding the warm glass. "But mostly... I just feel peaceful."
Bruce looked at me, a soft, genuine smile touching his lips. "That’s because you’re a good mother, Gabrielle. Vengeance was never your goal. Safety was."
