Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary

While the legal hammer smashed her family's wicked empire, Maya was building a fortress of peace for her daughter.

In a quiet, leafy neighborhood three miles from the hospital, a cozy two-story brick home stood surrounded by blooming oak trees and blue hydrangeas. Maya had secured the lease two weeks prior, intending it as a surprise fresh start for her and Ellie away from the noisy apartment building where her mother kept dropping in unannounced.

Ellie was discharged from Mount Sinai on Friday afternoon. Her vital signs were completely restored, though her pediatric psychologist, Dr. Aris, emphasized that the emotional recovery would take time.

Maya carried Ellie across the threshold of their new home. The air inside was cool, sweet, and filled with the gentle scent of lavender and fresh linen.

"Look around, sweet pea," Maya whispered, setting Ellie down gently on the soft plush rug in the living room.

Ellie blinked, looking around at the bright, sunlit room. There were no dark corners, no loud arguments echoing through thin walls, no sudden visits from Aunt Rachel barging in to criticize Maya’s choices.

In the corner of the room stood a brand-new white bookshelf filled with Ellie’s favorite books, and beside it was a wide window seat covered in soft purple pillows.

Ellie walked slowly toward the window seat. She reached down into her pocket, pulled out her purple backpack, and set it on the cushion.

She didn't tap the moon zipper.

Instead, she gently unzipped it, pulled out her small sketchbook, and set it on her lap.

Maya knelt beside her, tears brimming in her eyes. "Do you like it, Ellie?"

Ellie looked at her mother. For the first time in four days, a tiny, genuine smile touched the corners of her lips.

"Is Aunt Rachel coming here?" Ellie asked softly.

"No, baby," Maya said, taking Ellie’s small, soft hands into her own. "Aunt Rachel, Grandma, and Grandpa are never coming here. They will never be anywhere near you ever again. I promise you that on my life."

Ellie let out a long, quiet breath—a breath she seemed to have been holding for years. She leaned forward, wrapping her arms tightly around Maya’s neck, burying her face in her mother's shoulder.

"I love you, Mommy," Ellie whispered.

"I love you more than the moon and all the stars, my sweet girl."
