Chapter 9 - The Hammer of Justice

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.
When the court reconvened at 4:00 PM, the atmosphere inside Courtroom 302 was electric with tension.
Judge Abernathy looked at the jury foreman, a stern, grey-haired military veteran sitting in the lead chair.
"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Abernathy asked.
"We have, Your Honor," the foreman declared, standing tall.
He read the verdict form clearly into the microphone:
"On Count 1, Attempted Reckless Homicide: Guilty as charged for Rachel Vance."
"On Count 2, Felony Child Endangerment: Guilty as charged for Rachel Vance and Elaine Vance."
"On Count 3, Grand Larceny in the Second Degree: Guilty as charged for Rachel Vance, Elaine Vance, and Warren Vance."
"On Count 4, Systemic Financial Scheme to Defraud: Guilty as charged for Rachel Vance and Elaine Vance."
Rachel let out a sharp, guttural scream of denial, collapsing forward onto the defense table. "NO! NO! THIS ISN'T FAIR! MAYA DID THIS TO ME! MAYA RUINED MY LIFE!"
"Order in the court!" Judge Abernathy barked, slamming his gavel down repeatedly. "Silence!"
Elaine covered her face, sobbing uncontrollably as deputies stepped forward to place heavy iron chains around her waist and wrists. Warren bowed his head, accepting his fate with silent, broken remorse.
Judge Abernathy adjusted his glasses, looking down at Rachel with cold, unyielding severity.
"Rachel Vance," the judge said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Your actions on July 18th were not merely criminal; they revealed a profound, shocking void of basic human morality. You left a defenseless six-year-old child to suffer in lethal conditions for financial gain and personal malice, and then had the audacity to mock her suffering."
He slammed his hand on the desk. "I sentence you to the maximum allowable under state law: Twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of parole for fifteen years."
"NOOOOO!" Rachel shrieked as two heavy-set deputies grabbed her under her arms, lifting her off the floor as she kicked and screamed hysterically.
"Elaine Vance," Judge Abernathy continued, unbothered by Rachel’s thrashing. "For your role in the horrific abuse of your granddaughter and your systematic financial fraud, you are sentenced to Twelve years in state prison."
"Warren Vance, in light of your full cooperation and restitution testimony, you are sentenced to Three years in state custody."
As the deputies dragged Rachel and Elaine through the side doors toward the holding cells, Rachel turned her wild, tear-streaked face toward Maya one final time.
"MAYA!" Rachel howled, her voice echoing down the concrete holding corridor. "YOU DESTROYED OUR FAMILY! YOU'RE DEAD TO ME!"

Maya stood tall in the front row. She watched the heavy steel security doors slam shut behind her sister, cutting off her voice forever.
She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel victory. She felt only a profound, beautiful sense of peace. The cancer that had plagued her life for thirty years had finally been excised completely.
