Chapter 4: The Truth Emily Buried

Ryan sat frozen beside Emily's hospital bed.
The newborn nursery was just down the hall.
Their daughter was healthy.
Emily was alive.
And yet, for the first time since they met six years ago, Ryan felt like he was sitting beside a stranger.
Emily's eyes remained fixed on the file in his hand.
Neither of them spoke.
Finally, Ryan broke the silence.
"Emily… what happened eight years ago?"
She closed her eyes.
Tears escaped immediately.
"Ryan… I never wanted you to know."
His voice softened.
"Know what?"
Emily looked toward the ceiling.
"When I was twenty-two, I was engaged."
Ryan blinked.
"You were engaged?"
She nodded.
"His name was Daniel."
Ryan had never heard the name before.
Not once.
"He wasn't a bad man," Emily whispered. "At least not in the beginning."
"He made me laugh."
"He promised we'd have a family."
"He promised we'd grow old together."
She smiled sadly.
"But promises are easy."
The room fell quiet.
"He was killed by a drunk driver six months before our wedding."
Ryan's expression softened.
"Oh, Emily…"
"I found out I was pregnant two weeks later."
Ryan sat motionless.
"You were pregnant?"
She nodded.
"I lost the baby at five months."
Tears streamed down her face.
"And I almost died."
Ryan reached for her hand.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I wanted that life buried."
Emily's voice broke.
"I wanted a new beginning."
She looked into his eyes.
"Then I met you."
"You gave me a reason to live again."
Ryan squeezed her hand.
"You never had to hide that."
But Emily shook her head.
"That's not the secret."
Ryan froze.
"What?"
"The accident caused severe damage."
"The doctors told me I would never carry another child."
"They performed surgeries."
"They said there was no chance."
Her voice became barely audible.
"So when I found out I was pregnant with Lily Grace…"
She began crying.
"I thought God had given me a miracle."
Ryan held her tightly.
"You should've told me."
"I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Afraid that if I talked about the past…"
She paused.
"Something would take this away from us."
Ryan kissed her forehead.
"Nothing's taking us apart."
But before Emily could answer, someone knocked gently on the door.
A nurse stepped inside.
"Mrs. Carter?"
Emily smiled weakly.
"Yes?"
"There's someone downstairs asking about the baby."
Ryan frowned.
"Our family?"
The nurse shook her head.
"No."
"An older gentleman."
"He says he has been searching for someone for thirty years."
Emily looked confused.
"So?"
The nurse swallowed.
"He showed us an old photograph."
Ryan sat upright.
"What photograph?"
The nurse hesitated.
"A picture of a young woman holding a newborn baby."
"And, Mrs. Carter…"
Her voice became uncertain.
"The woman in the photograph looks exactly like you."
Emily's face turned pale.
"No."
Ryan looked at her.
"What?"
Emily whispered in horror.
"No… that's impossible."
The nurse continued.
"The man says if you're really Emily Carter…"
"He needs to tell you the truth before it's too late."
Ryan stood up.
"What truth?"
The nurse looked toward the hallway.
"He says…"
"Emily Carter isn't your real name."
And suddenly…
Emily burst into tears.
Because she recognized the description immediately.
Only one person in the world owned that photograph.

And she hadn't seen him…
