Chapter 4 - Mateo’s Discovery

Before leaving the building, my phone buzzed on the desk. It was a text message from an unknown number, accompanied by a short video file.

The sender was my ten-year-old son, Mateo.

“Dad, don’t leave. Look at this before you go.”

I tapped the video. The footage was shaky, shot on a smartphone from the angle of the upstairs landing. It showed the dining room during the dinner party the previous evening—specifically, the moment Veronica claimed her diamond bracelet was missing.

The camera zoomed in with startling clarity.

It wasn't a guest recording. It was footage from the smart-home security hub in the dining room—a feed Veronica thought she had disabled, but which Mateo had learned how to access through his coding classes.

In the video, while everyone was distracted by the commotion of the missing bracelet, Veronica can be seen sliding her hand into my mother’s coat pocket while pretending to steady her, slipping the diamond bracelet deep into the lining.

Moments later, she signaled the housekeeper to perform the search.

My hands curled into tight fists. My own son had witnessed the setup, understood the danger, and covertly extracted the proof while everyone else was blinded by the social theater of wealth.

I called Mateo’s room directly. The phone rang twice before a sleepy, brave little voice answered.

“Dad?”

“Mateo. Are you awake?”

“I couldn't sleep,” the boy whispered. “Abuela didn't steal that bracelet, Dad. I saw what Veronica did. I wanted to tell you at the table, but everyone was shouting, and I was scared.”

“You did the right thing, son,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “You protected your grandmother. Listen to me very carefully. Pack a small bag. Javier, my associate, is waiting downstairs in the lobby. He’s going to take you to a safe place until I come back.”

“Where are you going?”

“To bring your grandmother home.”

“Can I come?” Mateo asked, a note of pleading in his voice.

“Not yet, buddy,” I replied softly. “This is something I have to fix myself. But I promise you, when I come back, our family is going to be whole again.”
