Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at Peterson Headquarters

On Saturday afternoon—the exact day the Peterson family was scheduled to host their elite, ultra-exclusive winter charity gala at the Drake Hotel—I stood in the lobby of Peterson Tower.

I wasn't wearing an evening gown or preparing to make small talk with Chicago’s social elite. I wore a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit, crisp white silk blouse, and carried a leather briefcase containing the final asset-seizure warrants approved by a federal judge three hours earlier.

Zoe and Marcus stood beside me.

As we stepped out of the elevator onto the fortieth floor, we found Frank, Carol, and Megan waiting for us in the executive boardroom.

Frank looked ten years older than he had a week ago. His silk tie was loosened, his shoulders slumped, and his once-arrogant posture completely collapsed. Carol sat beside him, holding a tissue, while Megan stood near the window, her arms crossed defensively over her chest, though all the arrogance had vanished from her eyes.

When the boardroom doors opened, Frank stood up slowly, taking two hesitant steps toward me.

“Chloe,” Frank said, his voice cracking, almost begging. “Please. Let’s sit down like civilized people. We can negotiate a settlement. We’ll give you whatever financial payout you want from the family trust. Just... stop the receivership.”

I stopped a few feet away from him, my expression an unyielding mask of absolute coldness.

“A settlement, Frank?” I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the silent boardroom. “You think this is about money?”

“It has to be about money,” Frank pleaded, gesturing helplessly around the room. “We can give you millions. We can set Lily up with a trust fund that will last three lifetimes. Just sign the release forms.”

“You still don't get it, do you?” I shook my head slowly. “For seven years, your family treated my daughter and me like we were disposable ornaments in your little social kingdom. You belittled my career, you mocked my background, and when your daughter physically assaulted a five-year-old child in your home, you all looked the other way and told us to swallow our dignity.”

Megan uncrossed her arms, stepping forward with a flash of her old venom. “Oh, stop acting like such a martyr! It was a slap! Kids get disciplined all the time! You’re destroying an entire family over a bruised cheek!”

Before I could speak, Zoe stepped forward, her eyes flashing with pure fury.

“You hit a five-year-old child because she didn't want to eat turkey, Megan,” Zoe said, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “And now you’re going to watch your family lose everything because you couldn't control your toxic, bloated ego.”

Marcus stepped beside me, sliding a final set of papers across the polished mahogany table toward Frank.

“What is this?” Frank whispered, picking up the top document with trembling fingers.

“That,” Marcus said smoothly, “is the final order of corporate receivership. As of 2:00 p.m. today, Peterson Holdings is formally seized by the federal bankruptcy court due to documented insolvency and criminal financial fraud. The assets are being liquidated, the board is dissolved, and Frank, your personal estate is being seized to satisfy back-taxes and restitution.”

Frank stared at the paper, the final pillar of his life crumbling completely beneath his feet. He sank back into his chair, covering his face with his hands as a ragged sob escaped his throat.

Carol broke down entirely, weeping openly into her hands, while Megan stared at the document in horror, realizing that her credit cards, her luxury apartment, and her social standing were gone forever.

I looked at them one last time—not with anger, not with triumph, but with the profound, quiet peace of closure.

“Goodbye, Frank,” I said softly.

We turned around and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the Peterson empire buried beneath the very accounting ledgers they thought they could manipulate.
